Personal Narrative: Football Field Day
I am six years old and in the first grade. Today is my favorite day of the year, besides the last day of school. It’s Track and Field Day! The sun is shining, and it’s a beautiful May day. I’m standing on the dusty dirt track, and I feel the sun on my skin and the wind in my hair. I hear my classmates chattering all around me. The grass under my feet is soft, fresh, and green. One problem breaks the stillness of this place. I want to win a blue ribbon, but I am not the fastest girl in the grade. Alyssa is. She is tall, skinny and fast. I am short, skinny, and slower than her. Quietly, to myself, I say, “You can do it, Annika.”
I sit on the bleachers with my class, nervously and anxiously clutching the plastic water bottle with my initials

The time is winding down until it is my turn to race. I hear Mr. White call out with gusto, “All first graders to the middle of the football field.” It’s my turn! We make our way down to the field. Then, they separate all of us girls into groups based on the race we are participating in. I am running the 200-meter dash. I wait patiently and hope that Alyssa chose to do the 400-meter dash or the 100-meter dash. Any race, but not the 200. She is next in line, and then she walks toward my group. My heart sinks. There are still a couple races to go before I race: the 50-yard dash, the 75-yard dash, and the 100-meter dash. Breathe in, breathe out. Breathe in, breathe out. Relax, Annika. It’s going to be just fine. I see my mom in the crowd, and she smiles and gives me two thumbs up. Mr. White yells, “All first-grade girls doing the 200-meter dash, please come to the starting line!” That’s me! My heart begins to beat a little harder, and my legs are ready to go. The shirt that I am wearing has wings on the back. I know that I will fly today. As Mr. White explains the route of the race, I see Alyssa, further down the start line. “On your mark. Get set. GO!” I start off slower, but I gain speed as I go. My heart is pounding out of my

Weighing 225 pounds, I recognized that I needed to lose weight. Losing weight wasn't that much of a challenge because I went to practice and walked five miles home. Now I weigh 170 pounds. In my first 400 meters race, I ran in 56.4 seconds, and I recently ran the same race in only 51 seconds. I went to both championships last year before I failed to qualify for the next round. However, going from nowhere to possibly breaking the school record this year has motivated me to do greater things in life. Even though track wasn't a life-changing experience, the small things I got out of it were important. For example, I lost weight and gained dedication, medals, and friends. I also learned that if I make the effort, tremendous things are…

The cool fall air brought light goose bumps to my arms. Still a bit bothered by the cold, I took my long brown hair out of its usual ponytail and let it spread out across my back, warming my in the slightest. I rubbed my arms absentmindedly, looking around for Octavia. We always met here, on the metal bleachers, which rose above the green football field, waiting until the practice was over and Jake could drive us home. When I realized that she wasn’t anywhere near me, I turned my attention to the players on the field. The football team this year is supposed to be amazing, at least, from what I have been told and from what I have seen. Basically every student at Arrowsmith High School’s life revolved around football, or so it seemed. It…

“It was May 2016 at the state track meet in Gulf Shores, Alabama. I had just finished third in the 800-meter race. I left the track area, and Coach Kirby Patterson from UWA had approached me. She wanted me to come and visit UWA. I was excited because I knew I wanted to continue running track while in college, but I just did not know where. After visiting, I felt like it was the perfect place and opportunity for me to continue with my passion.”…

“LET’S GO BOYS!!!! LET’S WIN THIS!!! BEAT THESE RAVENS!!!!!!” The crowd was screaming and chanting wildly as we began to run out of the locker rooms and onto the large football field. I lead them, raising my arms up and down to signal the crowd to get louder with their cheers. As I did this, I was also sprinting to the middle of the field through the large slit that was cut for my eyes. I turned back to the crowd in the stands, and the players ran around me, with smiles of their faces, to get to their positions and the bench. I started to jump and raise my arms, “ FROGGY!!! FROGGY!!! FROGGY!!!” They all chanted my name in union, some of them even had signs and horns! A large smile crept onto my face behind my large mascot mask, and I couldn’t…

The bus ride to Muscle Shoals High School felt like hours and hours while only minutes had passed. My stomach flipped ferociously like a gymnast on the vault. My friends were trying to hype me up, but I could only focus on the fear and shaking of my body. I was too afraid to move, but too prideful to act as though I was as nervous as I was. As my legs carried me onto the huge field where vibrant reds and blacks were flaunted over the walls and seats, I observed the very place I would spill all my hardwork and dedication and I began to grow anxious. “Just breathe” I told myself over and over and over. I was so busy arguing with myself that I barely noticed the loudspeaker singing my name. I walked to the field and slowly crouched like a lioness hunting her prey. POW. The gun went off and everything became normal to me. Running had become like breathing or eating or sleeping. I no longer feared the idea of failure, but yet embraced the idea of succeeding. I bolted across the finish line with many seconds between me and my opponents. Not only did I win the war within myself, but I helped my team win the entire meet. Everyone can win their battles, you just have to have the will and determination to do…

Eighth grade year, gym class, flag football. I remember this day like it was yesterday. I had a fuming hatred for the gym teachers and their actions toward these pre-pubescent kids who take everything a little too personally, but with these rude teachers each and every reaction from each and every kid was appropriate. The only way I could describe these teachers is 40 year olds who find joy in making 13 year olds miserable. So, it all began when the flag football unit started. I wasn’t afraid of the evil humans we called gym teachers; I spoke my mind. Football was usually the last unit every year and every year the girls had to relearn how to play football, while the boys got to go play outside right away without an ounce of review. Because I am me, this wasn’t going to fly.…

My freshman year, I decided to join my high school Cross Country team. When I started running, it quickly became clear that I was not a gifted athlete. I was slow and often did not enjoy the sport. When the season first started, it took me forty minutes to run a 5k. This time was appalling but oddly, it was what kept me from giving up. There were times when I wanted to quit and go back to never running but the thought of that forty-minute 5k stopped me from doing so. I stayed on the team and pushed myself harder and harder every day. When I felt like stopping, I made myself go even further. I came to practice every single day and sometimes I stayed late. On the days that we did not have practice as a team, I ran on my own. I was dedicated…

1Some boys taught me to play football. This was fine sport. You thought up a new strategy for every play and whispered it to the others. You went out for a pass, fooling everyone. Best, you got to throw yourself mightily at someone’s running legs. Either you brought him down or you hit the ground flat on your chin, with your arms empty before you. It was all or nothing. If you hesitated in fear, you would miss and get hurt: you would take a hard fall while the kid got away, or you would get kicked in the face while the kid got away. But if you flung yourself wholeheartedly at the back of his knees—if you gathered and joined a body and soul and pointed them diving fearlessly—then you likely wouldn’t get hurt, and you’ stop the ball. Your fate, and your team’s score, depended on your concentration and courage. Nothing girls did could compare with it.…

Despite my fear of every upperclassman, I tried to become mentally focused for the start of the tryout. The coach walked up to the field standing at 6’6 and a deep voice that could scare Christmas away from kids, he then shouted to the athletes, “Get on the goal line we are doing sprints.” Sweat began to pour down my face while pumping my legs and arms as fast as I could to keep up with the upperclassmen. I wanted to catch the coach’s eye and prove that I could handle playing with the upperclassman. Halfway during the sprints some athletes began to quit and walk off the field because they thought it was too intense and weren't ready for the challenge. Now those who quit new their chances of making the team became slim. I sparked an…

The girl who had said she was going to keep up with me said that I wasn't running the mile anymore, and that I had run half of the 5K and was doing quite well. Now, all I had to do was make it back. I was exhausted. I felt like I had just run a mile and a half which I had! However, the run back wasn't as hard, nor did it seem as long. Before I knew it, the girl was sprinting, and I could see the finish line. She yelled back, “Hurry up kid!” and that’s what I did. The last 50 yards was the two of us busting our butts trying to finish first. She beat me, of course, and she asked me if that was my first race. I told her it was, and she shook my hand saying good job. When she left to join her family, my dad walked up with my brother Alex, who had also run the mile (except he only ran a mile, not the 5K like me.) My dad told me that Zach was still out running the 5K, too. He said he was proud of me for running the…
