Personal Narrative Essay

It was my first year of high school and I thought about playing sports but never told anyone. All my friends were already into sports and I didn’t even understand it. First, I thought I would be too shy to play anything, I don’t like a crowd of people. Then I thought my weight and height would be a big issue, I didn’t even think I could get pass try outs. Everywhere I would go I would always be the shortest person. Eventually my thoughts changed.
After being in school for about a month I decided to try out for the volleyball team. My friends would always pressure me to come try out because they were a part of the team but I was just too scared. When I went to try outs I had no idea to what was going on, I was just doing what everyone else was doing. While practicing I still didn’t know the rules of the game I just thought someday

I knew I couldn’t play in front a crowd of people. I didn’t want to try out for the team because I was so shy. Everywhere I would go I would be the quietest person out the group. I never talked to anyone unless they would speak to me. Playing volleyball really took me out my comfort zone.
After getting used to playing volleyball everything just felt so easy. I thought being that I was short I was getting cut from the team but they were actually happy to keep me. My height always made me feel like I was too short for everything. I never seen a short girl play in a volleyball team but, there are actually short girls that do play volleyball. After learning the game, the coach moved me to varsity with the well experienced players.
More and more as I played the game I enjoyed playing. I fell in love with a sport I didn’t know anything about. The more I played the more I learned. Everything became so easy after that. After volleyball season was over I went and try out for the softball team. I didn’t know anything about softball but I knew it would be

For the past four years I have been intrigued in the sport volleyball. I use to play on a club team in Blacksburg. When my family moved I started to play a different travel team called Rampage, and I also played school ball this year. How the years have gone by I have loved the game more and more each season. The things I enjoy most about volleyball are our rotations, my position, and my teammates.…

I signed up for volleyball. I have only had two practices. Hitherto, I acquired the skills of passing the ball, serve overhand, and set the ball. I failed to attend the first practice. As a result, I do not know how to properly serve underhand. Practice is every Friday night from six “o” clock to six forty-five at Anderson Farm Park. Moreover drills, we play games. One game I relish is where a person serves the ball to the other side of the net and tries to hit someone. If they are not successful, they have to sit were the ball landed. If they do strike someone, they earn a point. Volleyball is an enjoyable experience.…

People often ask me, “do you play basketball or volleyball? Because you’re really tall.” As a six-foot-tall girl, I find that people are disappointed when I tell them “no, not anymore.” I was always told by coaches and parents that “you have potential,” but basketball, much to my dad’s dismay, was not for me. I found that I had the potential to do something with my life, to be someone bigger than myself. My freshman and sophomore years, I did not want to be involved in my school. Rather I wanted to get in and get out and go to college. But all that changed when I decided I wanted to be a Link Crew Leader, at the time I did not know what it meant to be a link leader, I just knew I wanted to be one.…

I remember my first day stepping onto the field. It was freshmen year and I had heard about the team through a friend. I was not so sure about joining the team at first because it has been a while since I played. At this time I was cheerleading for Chargers, CFA All Star Team and Coral Glades squad. However, I saw softball as a great opportunity to meet new people and try something new. That was the best decision I made in high school. As soon as I stepped onto that field I was welcomed with open arms! I made so many new friends through softball. They have helped me build the skills I needed to excel. Being on a team where everyone can get along and help each other is honestly the best feeling ever.…

As a freshman, I made the varsity volleyball team. With this position came a lot of responsibility and pressure. My teammates always looked at me as the “baby”, but they expected me to play at the same level as the seniors. I learned how to deal with difficult personalities and I learned how to commit myself to a team and a sport. I also learned that I was a role model to other teammates and young volleyball players. Just like the Pink Ranger, people looked up to me and I tried to lead by example throughout my volleyball career.…

As an athlete you can get to see the different types of attitudes and emotions other athletes have, good or bad. In high school I started playing sports which really got my competitive side out but it also came with emotions I didn’t know how to control at the time. My first time playing volleyball I started off by practicing and playing with the varsity team at school. When season came along I didn’t make the cut for varsity so I was put on the J.V. team with girls who didn’t know how to play that well. That’s when my emotions started to show because I wasn’t used to playing with a team where I was the only one that knew what we had to be doing. After that season was over the next two years I was on varsity and I was still not able to get ahold of my attitude and emotions. I was aware that this was a problem for the team and I and that I looked bad but I didn’t know how to control it so I let it be. My last season I had learned to control myself but it was very limited and it wasn’t enough. When I finally graduated my coach asked me if I would like to help him with the team, I agreed. I started going to their games and practices and noticed two of the girls had the same attitudes as I did and felt how frustrating it was to deal with them but I decided not to pay attention to them. It was at one of their games when it hit me and I realized that I used to look as bad as they did and I was really embarrassed of myself. At that point I made myself a promise that I would keep my emotions and attitude on check if I played in college I wanted a fresh start and I’ve kept my promise till this…

The beginning of sixth grade was when I first was involved with sports. I loved basketball, but it also was the only sport I did for a year. The next year was when I really got involved with all sports. I participated in volleyball. I never really thought that I, not the smallest or bravest girl, would enjoy volleyball but I did. It was so fun and I was actually good at it! I was so surprised by the end of the season. I was able to block, reach over the net, hit, pass, and I wasn't afraid to fall to the ground. Now, being a senior in high school and over half way to graduating I absolutely love volleyball. My dream ever since freshman year when we went to a WSU volleyball game was to be college student playing volleyball on a college court in front of a big crowd shouting of my name because I have played great. Since then I have come to realize that I am too short to play college volleyball. I feel really tall next to my friends and family members but when I stand next to the college volleyball players I am a shrimp. I want to do something with my life that involves sports. I feel like sports make up my personality. Even if I am weak at some sports, it helped build up my leadership, my confidence to achieve something that I need to work on, and my ability to stay competitive against others. The closest career that dealt with sports and made a decent amount of money was athletic…
