VOLLEYBALL While lazing around the house last Thursday in a turkey induced food coma, I was letting my mind wander and reflect back to the past times in my life that I normally try to keep myself from thinking of. During all the recollecting of my past memories I came to the dramatic realization: Volleyball saved my life.
It wasn’t until 6th grade that I discovered volleyball. My team bonded quickly, easily becoming close friends over the next couple of years as we learned the basics of the sport and perfected our skill in eager preparation for our first year of high school.
Freshman year finally arrived, meaning we could finally compete for actual trophies and glory. We got to meet our new coach that would move up with us each fall season: Pule Misa, big, happy, gorilla-like, always singing Samoan, who became a second father for all of my teammates and me. Despite the fact that he didn’t speak one lick of English, he was able to teach us everything necessary for snagging our 1st place in region that year. (Varsity took 2nd at state that year.) Then, 10th grade came and we annihilated all sophomore teams in our region with ease. (Varsity took 3rd.) Next was our JV year, and we finally got to taste what going to the state championships was like. Rousing. It made the anticipation for our predictably undefeated season senior year even greater than before. Once again my team claimed the 1st place trophy. (Varsity earning a close 2nd.) My senior volleyball team was the most anticipated team in the state, the state trophy practically in our glass showcase already. The state title was all any of us wanted, and my team was determined to have it. We kicked off the summer prior to our senior year living on the court. We would play at least four hours everyday, along with meeting for the occasional early morning runs and lifting in the weight room. Primed and ready, nothing was going to impede us from bringing the state trophy home to Dixie.

I signed up for volleyball. I have only had two practices. Hitherto, I acquired the skills of passing the ball, serve overhand, and set the ball. I failed to attend the first practice. As a result, I do not know how to properly serve underhand. Practice is every Friday night from six “o” clock to six forty-five at Anderson Farm Park. Moreover drills, we play games. One game I relish is where a person serves the ball to the other side of the net and tries to hit someone. If they are not successful, they have to sit were the ball landed. If they do strike someone, they earn a point. Volleyball is an enjoyable experience.…

I never played volleyball competitively, until my sophomore year of high school, but before then I played volleyball on the beach with my sister. Unfortunately, one day, the University of Houston's volleyball ball coach saw me playing and was beyond amazed. From that day forward, I was the first ever to get a female sports scholarship, full…

Our second game was against the former coach for UNA, Jason Anderson. Coach Anderson was the original coach who offered me a scholarship to UNA. The tension was high, due to familiar faces. We ended up having to play them twice and we beat them both times. After winning all four games we reached the Championship series. Humbolt, from New York, was our biggest obstacle we had to face. The team with the best two out of three wins was to be named the National Champs. The first game we played, we lost to Humbolt. The loss hit us hard and our spirits were down. All season we had not faced a pitcher that shut us down completely. Walking to the locker room after that loss, felt as if we had already became runner up in the Championship series. Beating Humbolt twice the next day, seemed to be an impossible task. We sat in silence as tears ran down our faces. Our coaches let us cry and let us get our emotions out. She knew the pressure we felt and the adversity that was staring us in the face. After 30 minutes of silence, one of the players brought up the games we had to play against UAH. Another player mentioned the victory against Valdosta, and we were instantly reminded that we were capable of anything. We knew that all of the hard work we had put in was not going to waste. We were not going to settle for anything else but a National…

Playing sports has always been something that I enjoy to do, so I decided to play a new sport. And that was volleyball. As a new volleyball player I didn’t know the complete sport of volleyball and how it was played, therefore I began to do research on different successful volleyball players. That is when I came across Destinee Hooker and when I did it made me more desirable about the game and about how to make myself a better person. I instantly started to watch YouTube videos of her from when she was in college at Texas A&M and when she became a professional volleyball player overseas and for our own country. As I began to watch her, I started to follow her throughout the volleyball season. Furthermore I learned the basic steps to volleyball by watching her compete in the games she played. In more detail she was also participated in the London Olympic games for two thousand and twelve which really influenced me as an athlete. Even though the US team did not bring back gold for our country, Destinee as a player brought gold to my heart because she gave it her all in every…

It was winter season and that meant basketball. This year was special because I got to play for Davidson Day’s seventh and eight-grade team. See at our school the middles school ran through 5th to 8th. The middle school basketball teams were divided into a 5th-6th-grade team and a 7th 8th grade team. This season was different; we would play more games and different teams. Also we got a new coach and older teammates. Tryouts were rough; the older kids were picking on the 7th graders constantly. I was the only one they liked because I was good. The season got even worse. The 7th graders never played in the games and sometimes in the locker room older kids would yell at us for messing up. This was horrible to watch and be apart of.…

As a freshman, I made the varsity volleyball team. With this position came a lot of responsibility and pressure. My teammates always looked at me as the “baby”, but they expected me to play at the same level as the seniors. I learned how to deal with difficult personalities and I learned how to commit myself to a team and a sport. I also learned that I was a role model to other teammates and young volleyball players. Just like the Pink Ranger, people looked up to me and I tried to lead by example throughout my volleyball career.…

If I had to pick one extracurricular activity to pursue in college, I would definitely choose club volleyball. Ever since I started playing volleyball in the 7th grade, I have been hooked. From that point on, the sport has become an invaluable part of me that has helped me grow into the person I am today. Since I joined volleyball two years after most of my peers, I was put on the “B-team.” I was determined to work as hard as I could to be placed on an advanced high school team. Thankfully, my hard work earned me a spot on a state-winning varsity roster as a freshman. We went on to win two state championships, and I personally received an All-West Region award. In this way, volleyball taught me that teamwork, dedication, and perseverance…

Their short attention spans, and inability to be quiet when I was talking really tested me. Coaching gave me a sense of maturity and responsibility. One girl on my team has major family issues and would often come to practice crying. Helping her each practice and seeing her happiness increase and confidence go up throughout the season was so rewarding. Although the season is over, my relationships with these girls certainly is not. When I see these girls around I see them get a huge smile on their face that matches mine. It is so great to see them so happy to see me, that confirms that all the time spent with them meant something to them. I will snapchat them and get updated on their lives, mostly who their boyfriend of that week is. They have told me all about middle school and say how excited they are to see me come present to their classes. My favorite location to see them is at my own varsity volleyball games. This is where I get to show them everything I had been teaching them all summer. This pushes me to lead by example. If I made a mistake I remember they are in the stands watching me, watching to see how I react. I love that they push me to be…

A personal accomplishment that I am proud of is becoming the captain of my school’s volleyball team. I began playing volleyball my sophomore year. At first, I joined just because my friends were on the team, but soon volleyball became my passion. I worked hard to learn how to play by practicing every day at school, attending summer camps, and playing in summer leagues. While most of my friends were on vacation, I was at our high school gym playing volleyball and working on my technique. My coach noticed my athletic ability and allowed me to play on both the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams my first year.…

Volleyball had a significant impact on my life. It really helped build my self-esteem and instilled a value of hard work and setting goals. I was never the tallest player, never the fastest, or most athletic but I did work the hardest and I had a leadership quality. I also loved the game. I wanted to play every second that I could. If I wasn’t playing I was training. My motto was the harder you work the luckier you get. I remember trying to explain this concept my second oldest sister, who was an artist and not very sport oriented. She was very adamant that you cannot just get luckier. That was my point, I still don’t think she gets it today. While in high school I was the captain of the volleyball team each year. In my senior year…

Volleyball has come a long way from the dusty-old YMCA gymnasium of Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA, where the visionary William G. Morgan invented the sport back in 1895. It has seen the start of two centuries and the dawn of a new millennium. Volleyball is now one of the big five international sports, and the FIVB, with its 220 affiliated national federations, is the largest international sporting federation in the world.…
