Personal Narrative: Digging Into High School
Walking into high school freshman study hall, I felt a rush of nervousness and slight embarrassment when I asked for help from a tutor. Within a few minutes, I was assigned to a senior named Yingxu who spoke very little English. As we searched through my endless pile of worksheets and notes, Yingxu patiently waited to see the math problems I was having a tough time with. She helped me change the way I approached math problems. With her assistance, I learned more in one afternoon than an entire week of class. Yingxu was a math genius, but the most important lesson she really taught me was I had the power to solve any problem on my own.

After receiving help in school from my peers, I decided to become a tutor the following year. I met

The reason my academics aren’t going well as you or I would like is because of the several family issues I’ve had to face during my high school career. It began my Sophomore year, I found out my mom needed surgery in her arm so the chances of her cancer spreading would be reduced. I was under a great deal of stress worrying about my mother, taking care of my four siblings making sure they knew everything was going to be okay, even though I wasn’t sure myself. It was all up to me; while my other brother worked to help with bills, my mom being in the hospital, and my dad working. Taking care of my siblings consisted of cooking, homework, cleaning, nightly routine, and putting them to bed. When the work was done it would be around 10 o'clock. It was already tough to buckle down and focus on homework without all the stress. With all this my first semester grade was less than great.…

I learned a lesson all the way back in first grade, and that lesson has stuck with me ever since. I was coming in from recess, and I was talking to a friend of mine off to my left. Unfortunately, I was not watching where I was going. I kept barely taking glances of what was in front of me, and that was a huge mistake. Someone was running behind me, and wasn’t watching where they were going either. As I approached the building I heard yelling, but thought nothing of it. After all, recess had just finished, so obviously kids would be yelling, right? It turns out some kids had been playing tag, and decided to play until they got inside. One that was still running away, because God forbid he’d be “it,” was Nick.…

Throughout my years of high school I have always strived for the best grades that I could attain, and they didn’t come easy. There were plenty of distractions that had driven me off course. Whether it was long hours at practice, volunteering for my community, or having a part-time job, I couldn’t let these activities hinder my grades. This purpose had sprung in me, to not only strive in my extracurricular activities, but also my schoolwork. Balancing both school and additional activities wasn’t a simple task. This led me to many sleepless nights, in which I had to tutor myself on certain topics I was struggling on. This ranged from my hardest subject, to studying extra hours on my hardest class, and even simple topics that I needed extra work…

When I started Unity High School I thought that we were going to get a lot of work from my classes, and that work was going to be extremely hard. I also thought that I wasn't going to have any free time to do anything because of that, but it turned out to be wrong because the teachers give us a good amount of work but its not really hard. I thought that making friends in Unity would be hard in a sort of way but it was quit easy because everyone else was trying to make friends too. When I first got to Unity I also thought that there was going to be a few school clubs, but there is a good amount of clubs that students can join if they want to join some type of club. I think as a person I have grown more since first coming to Unity because I…

I never came kindly to the subject of Math. Math was always about constant rote memorization, full of extensive redundant notes that always found their way stuffed into the folds of my notebook never to be seen again. I held onto this impression the entire duration of ninth grade. However, upon a simple happenstance of acquiring the right math teacher with a different approach to math, I became increasingly aware of my previous errors in thinking. Everything was not as unyielding and tedious as I thought it was. Experiencing a teacher with a powerful new perspective altered my rigid frame of thinking, allowing me to excel in math.…

Starting high school was a terrifying idea to me. Different teachers, class times, lockers, drama! I remember that I always looked up to my older sister while she was in high school. She had tons of friends, played sports, participated in student government, and went out for the school play. I wanted to be just like her when I started high school. In middle school, I lined myself up for this, I played soccer in the fall and basketball in the winter. I helped out in the school plays, and I joined the student government. I had a group of great friends, and thought nothing bad was going to happen.…

Today was the day. Packed to the point of bursting open with new notebooks, folders, pens, pencils, and textbooks, he readied me for school. Instead of bouncing around as rambunctious young boys do, he trudged slowly in a peculiar meter of half-steps toward the doorway. He was living a new life in a new school that was filled with people who might as well have been aliens to him.…

As a young boy reading was never an exciting activity for me. Since the first day I began reading proficiently in the first grade all the way through high school, reading was always a chore. Novel after novel we read in class in which I found myself dozing off into the distance dreaming about everything but reading. The only books I’ve ever enjoyed to this day continue to be Magic Tree House, but after 3rd grade the story line begins to repeat and mock the others, kind of like a Capri sun after drinking them your entire childhood. However, the one thing that those books taught me is that a surprise can always be right around the corner.…

When I was seven years old, I went on a field trip to the Jim Cherry Memorial planetarium in Atlanta, Georgia. The theme that day was travelling thru space, they enhanced the experience by making the sets moving. It was astonishing, how something so far away seems so contiguous. At that moment, I knew that I had to learn more. I went home that same day and ask my mom what all she knew about space, but she did not know very much. The following day, I started doing my research when I was capable of doing so. I remember wishing for some to tell me more. Since then, I always wonder what goes on in space while I am down here.…
