Personal Narrative: Becoming An Attorney

As I start my first semester at ASU in a couple of weeks I can’t help but to realize the path to becoming an attorney starts now. These next steps are very important to achieving my goals. One of the toughest thing for a young college student is figuring out what they want to do with their life. Students change their majors up to three times in a matter of four years. Once I became aware of the shadowing assignment I knew this was going to bring change to my life. I also could not help but become extremely excited to see if I really knew if law was my passion in life.

My thoughts were going crazy with questions like how hard is this job? Is this really what I want to do with the rest of my life? Joses' assistant sat me down is his office and had me wait for him. Jose arrived and said let’s do this! We left for flagstaff around 10:30am. As we headed up north Jose explained the case to me. A man violated his probation and took off to Mexico. He returned to America and was extradited back to Flagstaff to finish his case. We arrived to the courthouse at 12:45pm court time was set at 1pm. As they brought out the client,my emotions went crazy due to it being my first time seeing someone in handcuffs. My heart was beating extremely fast and so many thoughts came about in my head. One thing I realized was that I loved being in the courtroom. Having to defend the client was amazing. The hearing was only supposed to be a motion to sentencing in a couple of months. The judge decided that there was no need for a wait and it was best to sentence the client now. The client was offered three-years of D.O.C., Jose got it down to one year with good behavior. For Jose and his client that was a very big win. The hearing was over and I quickly came to realize this field of work is for me. It gave me a feeling that i have never experience before.The client thanked Jose and we left back for Phoenix around 2:15pm. To get the opportunity to sit in on a live courtroom was unforgettable. I’m coming out of this experience understanding how competitive the law field can be. I need to make an effort to get the highest GPA I can possibly earn in my undergraduate. Also I need to have an above average score on the LSAT test for me to get into a respectable law school. This assignment has brought to my attention that this goal will not be easy, but will be worth it in the end. If it was easy everyone would become attorneys,judges,and prosecutor. I want to bring a change to the legal system. I feel like justice has been lost in certain areas of our Judicial system. In the future I plan on bring back justice for those who are less fortunate. One thing I came to realize after court was I want to be a criminal defense attorney. Before I was not fully committed to criminal law like I am now. This being because you never known what kind of case is going to come about. Outcomes are always different even if cases are similar. The thrill of different situations will bring me joy and many challenges. I do not want to follow in every other attorneys footsteps, I want to be to be the best. I want and will make a difference in Arizona law, and maybe one day bring change to America’s law. This experience has gave me a different look about being an attorney.
