Personal Narrative: A Career As A Prison Nurse
Casey Renfro
Mr. Cox English 1301
4 March 2012 Prison Nursing

I had been a nurse for 1 yr, and only worked in long term care. I craved a change in my career that was exciting, yet challenging; I decided to become a correctional nurse. I had no idea what was in store for me when I applied for a position with UTMB .I spoke with family and friends who thought I was crazy for wanting to work in such a hostile environment. Needless to say, I didn’t listen and followed my own instinct.
When I was hired, I had not taken a tour of the facility; day one was the first time I walked into a prison. As I walked in the gate house, I was saying to myself “this isn’t so bad!”I kept telling myself those same words the whole time I was taking my

By now my heart was in my throat, but I kept up the brave front .I learned that I would be working in our clinic with convicts that required inpatient medical care. My role was to provide nursing care only. A few things I had to take into consideration; they were convicts. They could be quite manipulative and they tried to test me every time I turned around. They asked questions about my personal life and they asked for favors. They would also ask me to bring in things from the “real world” or deliver items or letters. This behavior could be grounds for termination so any and every time I was asked to do any of the things I listed or anytime an inmate tried to get to personal it had to be reported. The inmate would then have to face disciplinary action. It was very hard to remember all the dos and don’ts while maintaing professionalism, as well as maintain safety and sanity. In the Texas prison system the inmates endure grueling conditions. In the winter its freezing cold, old boilers are all they have to keep warm. In the summer its smoldering hot, old noisy fans are all they have to keep cool. Being tender hearted as I am, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for them. I was raised to see the good in every body. I was also raised to believe in an eye for an eye. It was really hard to provide unbiased care when I knew I was dealing with a child molester or a rapist. I know we were trained to put all our

When I was a young nurse it seemed like problems I saw were continually put on a back burner or not treated fairly. It’s important to be accountable for mistakes. I have worked on a surgical floor for 16 years. On occasion we will be pulled to another unit if they are really short. I was pulled to an oncology floor when I had been an RN for about 3 years. I was not familiar with the chemo drugs and their schedules. But my med sheet had times listed when to hang certain things so I didn’t ask the charge nurse but went about hanging my drugs. Later in the day the oncologist saw what happened and threw a huge fit. I wasn’t told specifically what I’d done wrong but just that I was incompetant and he didn’t want me ever taking care of his patients again. That was hard to hear because most of the time I was told I was great to be around and a great asset to my unit. I asked the charge nurse what I done wrong. She said certain things weren’t compatible and that I had put the patient at risk but she also told me not to worry, she wouldn’t “report” me. She just kept poo pooing me and told me she would take care of things. It literally seemed like everything was just swept under a rug. Later after my shift was over I went back down to my floor and talked with my clinical educator about what happened. She used to work oncology so I knew she would understand that units procedures. She was upset that I was assigned a chemo patient to…

It appears you are gaining excellent leadership experience during this term. The ICU and Assistant Manager loss was defiantly a loss; however, Ellen’s ability as a leader to manage the unit has been outstanding thus far. When I first started working for SRMC Ellen was the ICU manager. She possesses invaluable knowledge to foster sustaining the structural vision and mission for the ICU, as well as the overall functioning of the organization. I witnessed her swiftly outline a plan that was conducive to meeting the needs of the unit, while preparing staff for the implementation of the “Dry Run Process” testing of the Open Heart Program. She is truly an exceptional leader! While I did not mention the nurse leader interview in my clinical log, I interviewed, Anne Fereday, RN, BSN, MSN who began her nursing career in Albany, NY and has held a variety of nurse leadership roles since 1991.…

During the summer I worked at a nursing home to gain some experience in the healthfield. Working as a certified nursing assistant really helped me grow and it is one of the most rewarding jobs I’ve had, it also was very challenging at times. As I said before I struggle with anxiety, but working as a nursing assistant pushed me to overcome some of the fears I had of communicating. I learned really quick when working in a nursing home you strongly need the ability to have good communication skills because without it you can’t communicate with the charge nurses, the residents or the other C.N.A’s. Everyday that I worked there I used different forms of communications such as body language which I learned says a lot about what a person is feeling.…

After getting the opportunity to go to a jail, see how my expectations are extremely outlandish and correct my expectation to be more rational and genuine. This experience has impacted me because it made me come to the realization that although the prison system does have its flaws and problems, it it not as bad as the media has made it seemed. Before I went on the tour, I could never imagine myself working in anything related to the prison system, and as a student studying to become a clerk, lawyer, and judge (respectively), it would be impractical to think that I would never get involved in the prison system, especially with my clients. This experience helped me conquer the fear that was keeping me back from what I wanted to major in: criminal law. I am very fortunate that this class gave me the opportunity to enter the world of corrections, in an educational and interesting…

When I joined the police department, I knew I wanted to be a part of something great. I wanted to leave a legacy and make an impression on others. I was the first in my family to choose a career in law enforcement, so initially, I was unaware of the challenges this career field came with. My mom was a teacher, and my dad worked in the printing business. Both were successful in their chosen fields, but they were blind to the demands required for a fulfilling career in law enforcement. To be successful, I would need to be observant of those around me who had found success. I would need to mirror their ways and incorporate their habits into my own. I would need to learn from their failures. Most importantly, I would need to learn what made them…

I grew up a shy, reserved girl that dealt with being one out of a handful of black people in my small town. I was isolated, silenced. I observed a warped blue-eyed and fair-skinned version of the world that even television and films supported. They had a way of making the largest and most culturally rich cities seem as ethnically and socially uniform as my own town. Luckily, it fueled my introspection and creativity. I imagined countless scenarios with heroines that could look like me. Earning an undergraduate degree in Psychology reinforced my understanding of people’s actions, motivations, and interpersonal relationships. So, my storytelling is character driven at its core and features a more inclusive kind of normal especially with regards…

It was a regular morning like any other in the hospital, the shift change was at 7 am, but many of us (workers) used to arrive earlier to enjoy the coffee that was made by "Albita" a great person, humble and hardworking. We usually sat in the dining room and we made jokes as we prepared to work all day. In the shift change we transfer the information from the previous shift, discuss about patients, psychiatrist decided changes in the medicine, the therapy was also discuss and who was going to be released from the hospital, so most of the patients were always very anxious for that meeting because most of them wanted to be release. I would say that almost all patients want to run out of mental hospitals, no matter what kind of mental illness they have, and to achieve this, they do several things, such as trying to hide delusions, bizarre conduct or maladaptive thoughts, among others.…

Frustration. That’s the first word that pops into me head every time I go to clinical. Day after day, being pushed out the way. It made me feel unworthy and stupid. Everybody is getting paired up nurses, while I—I just get to stay on the floor and do mediocre work. Yay. Why aren’t I getting paired with a nurse? Highest achieving student in my nursing class and everyone under the sun, except for me, gets to be with a nurse. I feel incredible anger when I think of why. Under these circumstances, I have been forced to take it out on myself. I keep interrogating my brain, racking my mind for possible causes of this injustice. I must not kid myself, I guess I’m more “book smart” than practical coordinated, but I still deserve a chance.…
