Icy Friendships The air was ice cold and dry; so cold that with each inhalation, my nostrils burned and as I exhaled my breath was as thick as fog. In the distance I could hear the tapping of the woodpeckers pecking up in the trees and the echoes of pine cones as they hit neighboring patios. With the sun shining bright and Mother Nature at peace, who could have possibly foreseen what was to come. Two girls had set out on a trip to the liquor store and returned home with far much more than a gallon of milk. Friendships are made through various bonds, but the strongest are made through life altering events, through fear and courage we found ours. The excitement of winter break was in the air. Carrying on our annual tradition my family, friends and I set out for our unforgettable weekend to Big Bear. I met my friend Andrea a few short months before while starting the sixth grade. To match Andrea’s golden espresso skin, she had thick mousy brown hair cut at her shoulders and her curled pieced bangs fell just below her eye brows. She had the look of an old Egyptian queen. Eye brows defined so perfectly, they looked as if Michelangelo had painted them himself. Her brown eyes were big and almond shaped with lashes so long they often tickled her eye lids. She was a rather short girl; about 5’1 with skinny gangly legs and arms, weighing no more than 90 pounds. She was meek and dainty, preferring to paint nails while talking about boys. I on the other hand acted like a boy. Growing up with the boys in the neighborhood I became a tomboy at heart. I had a short stature and short legs all equally defined like an athlete. I was 5’4 and 110 pounds and despite our matching brown hair and eyes, we were complete opposites. Where I saw excitement and adventure, she saw danger and trouble. As we pulled into the driveway, you could see the ice layered over the lake like a frosty mug. “Now I want you girls to listen up, STAY OFF THE ICE!” my dad

It was a casual August afternoon in Minneapolis, people walking the down the sidewalk, strangers passing by. We were visiting my old hometown. I was walking with Beth, and we were messing around. I used to have an inside joke with one of my friends from fifth grade, “Girl you need to chill.” It stuck once I moved. Anyway, Beth had just told me to chill, so, I walked into the nearest cold building. Which of course, ended up being a meat locker… 15 minutes later I was coming out and saw an all too familiar pair of square glasses. Before I could see her face, she turned away. Her bleached tip hair swung across her shoulders. The dark skin, the hair and glasses, it had to be Miracle Brown. This is the girl who was one of my best friends in sixth grade. She started heading down the street, so I told Beth to meet me back at our hotel.…

In chapter 12, the key event to me was when Claudia and Finn talked to each other through the keys. I felt many emotions when reading their interaction one of them being happy. I felt happy when they talked to each other because it was a turning point in the story in my opinion. I also felt surprised because at first, I thought by having two keys, there would be a lock that would need both keys to hear and speak to each other. I also felt confused by the way they conversed; How could they now hear each other but not before. I think by having one key being touched, the other key can hear because on page 153 Claudia says she breathed and rubbed on the key making it warm and on page 154 Finn says when he touches the key it's warm.I like the way the author wrote the scene from both perspectives, it gave us the readers a clearer understanding of how both Finn and Claudia felt. I also like how the author described the way both keys affect each other and have a "key" connection.…

It was a sunny afternoon in the spring when 9th grader Paulette's life was forever change. It started as an average day, for an average girl, in an average town, as though we all thought. As the school day was over at Immaculate Conception, Paulette Raney approaches her bus to Orange (a town in New Jersey). She takes her seat in the back, just like every day. While reading a book, she's interrupted and looks up with her beautiful hazel- green eyes to find a young man in front of her. His name was Spencer Salomon, a 9th grader, who asked her politely, "Is it okay if I sit next to you?" She said yes and moved her bags for him to sit. On the bus ride home that day they both talked, laughed and smiled with one another. As Paulette’s stop approached, she got up and Spencer said to her, “I hope I get to hang out with you sometime soon, you’re such a lovely girl.” It was what you called, love at first sight. From that day, they knew that nothing will ever be the same. It was the start of something new and beautiful.…

The thirteenth emoji going left to right, that has heart eyes and has its lips perked out is relateable to a part of the book where Jerome and Rory are kissing intensively. On page 200 it states "I started pressing my lips into his cheek - just a hint of a kiss,.....I felt his shoulders release, and he made a little noise that was partly a groan, partly a sigh. He kissed my neck up, up, up to my ear......My body flushed itself with all the good chemicals that it takes to reserve for making out. On page 201 it states " He told me scary Jack the Ripper facts, and I had the sudden need to make out with him until I ran out of breath. I would have continued indefinitely if........."…

It was Friday and only a few minutes left before the bell rang, letting everyone know their weekend is here. Three girls, Brooke, Chloe, and Alyson were in the bathroom ditching class. As they leaned against the sink they were talking about going to Alyson’s house for a sleepover, Alyson was hesitant to let them come over. While they were talking the bell rang and they ran to their classes to get their bags. After that they met in front of the Science building, Alyson paused for a minute to gaze around the school and felt overwhelmed by the amount of buildings and the people that pass through them every day. While Alyson was gazing at the buildings Chloe and Brooke were already on their way to the buses, Alyson…

My first day on the bus, I met a very important person to me. She would soon become the closest friend I would ever have. We shared a name, the interest in video games, and the hobby of drawing. But, other than that, we were very different. She liked white milk and hated chocolate (a.k.a “tainted milk”). I was the opposite. I enjoyed the company of dogs, she was obsessed with cats. But, differences aside, we enjoyed sitting together during lunch and just doodling all over each other's agendas and notebooks. We never really had any classes together, aside from homeroom together.…

The night before I left my home to start school at Kutztown, I cried. I slept next to my mom in her room, surrounded by stuffed animals around my body from my youth, tears streaming down my face. I was scared, nervous, and uncertain about my future. The idea of going to this new place, with new faces, and new beginnings excited me, but choked me at the time. I didn’t know what to think. My anxiety was at an all time high. The first night at Kutztown, I laid in my bed staring at the concrete, white walls, next to a girl I hadn’t known more than a couple months, wondering if this was it. I had spent most of the day unpacking what seemed to be a hundred boxes, transforming a bare dorm into my home for then next year. Cassie and I quickly grew into friends.…

Today was June 4, and the bus was coming to a halt in front of my gray, two story house. I threw my backpack up on my shoulders and grabbed the black French Horn case sitting next to me. Starting at the sunny blue sky, a warm sensation was on my skin. Not long after, me and Josie had passed the first seat. We quickly said thank you to the bus driver, Joel. And jumped off the bus side by side with a wide smile on our faces. We were both free from school for a whole weekend. Without any sports or sibling events, I was positive that we would be spending the whole weekend together. Then Josies voice interrupted my thoughts.…

Finally, when I moved to New Orleans I started volunteer work at the Children’s Hospital and helped with pop up clinics for the Latino community twice. Overall I found that helping others shouldn't be something seen as duty or mandatory, it should be spontaneous. Through others experiences and hardships we learn and grow as human beings, not only did I enjoy helping others but I felt that it helped me with my problems. Having moved around so much and meet so many people and living by myself so many years I came to truly be thankful for my blessings and specially for my hardships. Hermann Hesse once said, "I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value." Helping others made me realize that we all need help and that my way to help others would be through their health. It also taught me not to judge anybody, especially if you don't know what they have been through. I am hard believer that everything happens for a reason, and all the weekends I spend watching my parents help others helping others myself made me the determined person that I am today. Finally, the most important lesson I learned was to never give up, no matter how hard the task is or how bad the problem is there will always be someone willing to help and you can always be both sides to that, the helper or the one who needs…

After retaking the LASSI I have noticed a considerable amount of improvement as well as regression. In the beginning of the year, I vowed to myself that I would become a better student. I wanted to maximize all of my abilities in order to be successful. So, after I took my first LASSI and had my talk with Mac, I began to implement new strategies meant to help me accomplish my goal. First I had to deal with my anxiety. In past years I suffered with a lot of anxiety while learning math. I used to love math very much, however, this changed after my 6th grade year. Math became a foreign subject to me. I could no longer make connections and solve problems. As a result, my grades in math began to drop. As a person who is used to getting A’s and B’s on assignments, I had a difficult time in coping with my failure since it didn’t live up to my standards in the subject of math. My difficulty with math eventually caused me to have anxiety. I had carried this anxiety until my sophomore year in high school. It seemed as if no matter how hard I tried to concentrate on math tests my mind would always become blank. Luckily I had an…

Football has always been a big part of my life. As a young boy I would day dream of making insane touchdowns, making tackles that would leave man stuck in the ground, and even winning the heisman trophy. In 7th grade I had begged my mother endlessly to sign me up for pee wee football because she would always worry about the risks of football. After finally getting her to sign me up, we went straight into the season. I chose to play running back because as a 12-year-old I was remarkably fast having timed 5.3 in the 40 yard-dash. After a few weeks in the season we approached the playoffs and found out our opponent for the first round of the playoffs were the jaguars who were undefeated. Our team didn’t have the best chemistry on…

We all should remember those most wonderful times in Junior High / High School years. We shared our secrets with our best friends. We spent hours on phone talking about that cute boy from next door. Few girl friends slept over but chat about Susan’s new boy friend for the entire night. We were passing notes during class just to discuss Maggie’s ugly hair style. Looking back, we may not consider those secrets are important to us anymore. However, those secrets link us up and enhanced our friendships during the entire Junior High / High School years.…

“Girls it’s time to get up for school,” Mom yells up the stairs. This was the last words we wanted to hear today. How could this be it was snowing when we went to bed last night we thought to ourselves. Angrily we trudged out of bed and down the stairs only to sit next to the phone and wait for the call saying we had a snow day since there was quite a bit of snow on the ground. Finally after what seemed like an hour the call came. This was about to be the most epic snow day ever.…

My family had just moved to the area and today would be my first day at Miller Grove High school. I was shaking in my boots because knowing today would make-or-break me. As the door began to open the voices of my future classmates flooding over into the hallway. I stepped slow into the room trying not to catch the attention of the class, but of course my teacher had just walked in right behind me. My eyes open in shock because now everyone’s eyes were on me even the teachers.…
