Performance Enhancing Techniques In Friday Night Lights
In every sport performance-enhancing techniques can be used to better the athlete. There are many different techniques that can be used, such as arousal regulation, imagery, goal setting, self-confidence, and concentration. One may not always see these techniques being used but one way to see some of these techniques used is through sport movies. When originally watching movies one does not particularly analyze what is happening during the scenes but if one were to really pay attention they would see many of these sport performance techniques coming into play and being used. Two of the techniques that are mainly used throughout the movie are self-confidence and arousal regulation. Self-confidence is the belief that you can successfully perform a desired behavior (Weinburg, Gould, 2015 p. 324). There are many different ways to build self-confidence. In the movie many of these ways are displayed. In the book, Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology, it states a few different ways to build confidence. Some of these ways are through acting confidently, thinking confidently, imagery, goal mapping, physical conditioning and training, and preparation. Two of the biggest ways shown in Friday Night Lights is preparation and physical conditioning and training and arousal regulation. In the very first scene of Friday Night Lights, the quarterback, Mike Winchell is going over the playbook with his mother to prepare for the up coming season. As a quarterback he feels he needs to be the best prepared so that he can help his team win. By studying the playbook he is building confidence in himself.
