Paying Student Athletes
Intercollegiate sports have been around for over a century, but the popularity has increased dramatically over the last several decades. College football and men’s basketball have been the most successful of them all, drawing in the best high school players from not only the United States, but those from around the globe also. Without a successful developmental league in the NFL or NBA it falls upon the NCAA to prepare these young athletes for a pro career. The NCAA has no reason to complain about being the primary “developmental league” for the NFL and NBA because they generate a tremendous amount of revenue through lucrative contracts and endorsement deals. Student athletes have seen this and have started wanting some of the profits. Paying student athletes is not needed because the primary focus of going to college is to get an education, most other students have to pay for what they get for free, and the majority of college sports don’t generate enough money to pay student athletes. …show more content…
These are costs that most other students have to pay, whether it be through grants, working multiple jobs or even worse saddling themselves down with student loans that they will be stuck with paying off for years to come. Frank Kaminsky, the starting center from the University of Wisconsin 2015 National Championship team and 2015 Naismith Player of the Year is from Lisle, Illinois.(RealGM.com, 2015) The University of Wisconsin’s Office of Student Financial Aid (2015) the cost of out of state tuition there would be about $40,000 a year or $160,000 for his four years there. Honolulu, Hawaii’s Marcus Mariota played college football for the University of Oregon (NFL.com, 2015). According to The University of Oregon’s Office of Registrar (2015) the price of out of state tuition would be close to $44,000 a year.     Scholarships that's student athletes receive to play sports in college do not cover the full cost of college universities. In the world of sports , starting from high school a scholarship is an ideal dream of any athlete at any capacity. Scholarships are deemed as a free education and oppurtunity to play at the next level. In the article , "Cash , Check , or Charge ?" The author underlies athletes who receive a "full" scholarship covers room , board , books , tuitions , and fees. All universities estimate that the actual cost if attendance runs between $1500 to $2500. This goes on to disprove , the evolution of why should the NCAA pay college athletes for free question. Whether the athlete walks-on , receives a partial scholarship , or a full ride they'll be paying to attend college and to receive an education. In "Cash , Check , or Charge ? " author Douglas Looney claims "the basic reasons to pay collegiate athletes is that schools and boosters can't be stopped from doing what they do anyway" (n.p).
