ESSAY: Chose a designer who was influencial in the development of ‘Modernism’ in America, and discuss their work. The master designer Paul Rand provided the best Modernist definition of graphic desegn: ‘To design is much more than simply to assemble, to order, or even to edit: it is to add value and meaning, to illuminate, to simplify, to clarify, to modify, to dignify, to dramatiza, to pursuade and perhaps even to amuse. To design is to transform prose into poetry.’
Rand was part of a movement in the 1940’s and 50’s in which American designer’s were coming up with original styles. He was a major figure in this change that had a focus on freeform layouts that were much less structured than prominent European design. Rand used collage, photography, artwork and unique use of type to engage his audience. “Innovation leads one to see the new in the old and distinguishes the ingenious from the ingenuous”
Paul Rand(1914 – 1996) was a well-known American graphic designer, best known for his corporate logo designs. Rand’s education included the
Pratt Institute (1929–1932), the Parsons School of Design (1932–1933), and the Art Students League (1933–1934). He was one of the originators of the
Swiss Style of graphic design. From 1956–1969 and beginning again in 1974,
Rand taught design at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Rand was inducted into the New York Art Directors Club Hall of Fame in 1972. He designed many posters and corporate identities including the logos for IBM and ABC. Rand died of cancer in 1996.

    Though the start of the modernisation may trace back to the beginning of Industrial Revolution. “Modernism in the design world did not exist in a fully developed form, until well after First World War.” (Wilk, 2006) Causing the great loss of lives and other countless damage to the world, it reshaped many people’s way of thinking the world.     There weren’t huge strides in graphic design, until a few hundred years later when in 1750 the Industrial Revolution changed mass urban culture and the entire world. This transition marked not only social and economic change, from agriculture and commercial society to the modern urban areas.     Carson is largely responsible for popularizing the style, and was an inspiration for a generation of young designers coming of age in the 1990's. His work does not follow "traditional" graphic design standards (as espoused by an older generation of practitioners such as the late Paul Rand). Carson has a part of himself in every piece and he is emotionally attached to his creations. Carson's work is considered an exploration in thoughts and ideas that become "lost" in his (and his target audience's) subconscious.
