Paul Pfeiffer Analysis
The artist that peeked my interest the most within the, Art 21: Time video was Paul Pfeiffer. Pfeiffer appears to me as a man who understand the significance of his surroundings. Like myself Pfeiffer is attracted to events that bring in a crowd like sporting events, he works on showing the relationship between objects, what is around the object, and what role the object plays where it is. Pfeiffer even believed of himself as a translator not an author, meaning that what he is showing in his art isn’t his own he is recycling these materials, and displaying them in his own perspective, which I believe is very humble of him to admit.
Pfeiffer’s recreation of the “Amityville Horror” movie staircase is genius in my eyes. In the movie, as Pfeiffer described, the staircase is where a human being is standing at the top of the stairs and is gazing at the Devil at the bottom of the stairs. Pfeiffer created a small scale replica of the staircase from the movie, that is projected on a giant screen. On the screen you are basically playing the role of human looking down the stairs, but when you approach the screen there is a small hole when you look through the hole you are looking up the stairs making you take on the role of the Devil. In “The Long Count” pieces Pfeiffer removes the boxers that are within the ring, all you can see are silhouettes of the boxing stars. The pieces make me realize the importance of the boxing stars present within the boxing ring, without the boxer within the ring the audience's cheers and excitements seem unusual. The piece places the boxers directly at the center of attention showing that they are the ones that make the moment of excitements and that they are the ones that make up the sport itself. “The Long Count” piece sort of pays a homage to those who we cheer
