My Visit to the Torpedo Factory
Cherie Diggs
Art Appreciation- Art 100
Adam Veil
November 21, 2014

I decided to do my museum visit essay paper on the Torpedo Factory Art Center. I chose this particular museum because it’s located in Old Town Alexandria about ten minutes from my house. So when I dropped my son off for school I hopped on the bus and went there early Friday morning. During my visit to the Torpedo Factory Art Center on November 21, 2014 I got to see many different forms of art and although this museum isn’t as big as the National Smithsonian
Museum it still had lots of wonderful art displays to share from various artists many of them unknown but very talented. There were lots of artistic mediums used liked acrylic paintings, oil pastels on mat boards, etchings, drawings, watercolors, lithograph, etc. The ones I seemed to gravitate to the most were the oil paintings. I’m interested in the oil paintings the most because there isn’t one kind of oil painting, there are some called monotypes, plein air and just oil and water to name a few. While on my visit I came across many artists who used this medium and the various types but there were three particular artists that stood out to me because of the way they either blended colors , used the world as their inspiration or just painted a story that you instantly were drawn to when you saw it. Because of those three reasons I chose Betsy Anderson, Margaret Cerutti and Marietje
Chamberlain.
The first artist I chose was Betsy Anderson because of all the bright colors and tranquil imagines that the paintings themselves provoke. The painting is Mediterranean Waters 6 it’s a modernized style of painting that is more 21st century that is a lot of bright colors and lines that when put together gives you a visual of mountains, a big large mass of water and a beautifully lit sky with other hills and valleys all around. It really doesn’t fit into a particular art movement but

The first painting I came across that I instantly feel in love with was Yves Tanguy’s Neither Legends nor Figures 1930 oil on canvas. The teal blues and parts of grey drew me in, the unique shapes and floating objects made me wonder what she was trying to capture but overall it was the blues of the sky that had me intrigued.…

Edgar J. Brown is the artist that inspires me the most. I chose him because like Edgar I too have a fascination with sports. From a young age Edgar grew up in a family that was very sport oriented. From baseball, football too basketball and pretty much anything competitive they watched it, or played it. But sports were not the only talent young Edgar possessed. He was extremely good at drawing and painting. The paintings were mostly super hero related throughout his child. As he reached his high school years tough Edgar learned to combined his love for both sports and art to create some of the most amazing and captivating portraits of our greatest athletes.…

The Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC is a timeless building and a work of art itself. The building was designed with a contemporary style and is an outward expression of its artistic, belongings inside. I visited the Museum on Tuesday, July 02, 2013, at around 2 in the afternoon. I was within the museum for about 2 ½ hours, observing the exhibits. The building itself exceeded my expectations, but the inside took my breath away. Every detail within was elaborate and intended with thought; from the glass windows, to the straight lines of the architecture, to the overlooked design of the staircases. The museum was not extremely busy. The museum was occupied with an adequate amount of people, creating a comfortable, quiet, atmosphere to enjoy the art. I was able to enter the museum without feeling bombarded, compared to most popular attractions. The displays were prearranged for pleasant viewing, easy to maneuver around, and located suitably by collection and design. The ambiance and setting was much more peaceful than I expected. I particularly enjoyed the visit to the Mint Museum and am now encouraged to visit other art museums!…

Davis art reminds me of Pablo Picasso, plus, a lot of Davis artwork is created with Brittany Spears’s make-up which is very cool but odd. Also, he did a painting on cornflakes boxes and matchbooks.…

The particular artwork that I looked at was his “When We Ride” created in 2006. The media is a mix, which was created into a collage on canvas. The canvas was at its large of 46 3/8 x 62 ¼ inches. His medium of art is the natural surrounding wherever he may be. If he were somewhere cold, it would be ice he would use. If it were hot, he would use rocks or branches as his medium. He never brought any materials with him to help him if it was difficult to do. He didn’t even use glue or rope, things to bind the medium together. He would use snow and water for ice, or nothing at all when it came to sticks. Most of his pieces in the video were curvilinear. He stated that he was in love with the movements of the water has the rivers flowed in a curved pattern. None of his pieces were anthropomorphic though. He saw nature as it was and created his own image of it.…
