Palm Oil Mill Effluent Treatment Plant Ponds Cleaning
Palm Oil Mill (POM) Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) is one of the key plant to ensure smooth production of the mill. Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) generally is about 0.7m³/Mt Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB) processed. Total Solids are in the range of 11500 to 79000 mg/l and suspended solids is in the range of 5000 to 54000 mg/l. The organic content of POME is generally biodegradable and could be treated by anaerobic, aerobic and facultative processes. The processes are essentially biochemical and depends on the enhance growth and metabolic activities of the suitable microorganisms to transform the organic matter into methane, CO2, Hydrogen Sulphide and water. The microorganisms are primarily bacteria and algae which results in the production of excess biomass (microbial cells) which need to be dispose as sludge.
Technically, the following benefits will be attainable from the effort: one is, the legal compliance. Two is, the public & regulatory department trust. Three is, minimum impact to the mill operation as the solids harvesting could be done while running.
Minimum technical knowledge and ease of operation were considered when utilizing the fundamental and conventional methods of solids removal from ETP.
Basic principal scope of works is: first is, to provide basic engineering design for the solid removal. Second is, to provide materials, tools and equipments to fabricate, supply and install the necessary facilities for the cleaning operations. Third is, to provide manpower and technical expertise for the operation of the proposed system. And fourth is, to provide technical, operation support and monitoring reports of the proposed system.
The objectives of this paper is to provide an accepted engineering solution of solids removal from the ETP pond, and this would reduce the function and capabilities and also to provide alternative equipments & operations method of solid removal from ETP for higher performance of ETP system.
The proposed design will include the

The environmental impacts of farming practices can also be reduced with the adoption of sustainable production methods in the agricultural sector. Growing corn, wheat, rice, and sugarcane produces large amounts of agricultural wastes, some of which are burned, degrading air quality. In the production of cellulosic ethanol, the bulk of the biomass would become a valuable source of energy rather than a waste product. In fact, municipal solid waste (MSW) includes a large volume of cellulosic material that has the potential to be converted to ethanol.…

Abstract. The increasing number of marine oil spills asks for effective solutions for the environment. Bioremediation techniques have become a major mechanism for removing oil residues on the affected shorelines. Among the different techniques to enhance natural biodegradation by indigenous microorganisms, seeding of new bacteria and fertilizing the indigenous populations have attracted the most interest. The application of nutrients as nitrogen and phosphorus in the form of fertilizers have shown to be most effective in accelerating the biodegradation process and at the same time to be environmentally safe.…

One of the key factors involved in recycling wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent for another use is the need to reduce total dissolved solids (TDS). This is often done by using a reverse osmosis (RO) system, which relies on pressure differential to force a solution (in this case, water) through a membrane that retains the solute on one side and allows the pure solvent to pass to the other side.…

    3. Sewage disposal: Sewage water contains particles of dirt, mud etc. which are colloidal in nature and carry some electrical charge. These particles may be removed by using the phenomenon of electrophoresis. The sewage water is passed through a tunnel fitted with metallic electrodes and maintained at a high potential difference. The colloidal particles present in the sewage water migrate to the oppositely charged electrodes and get coagulated. This solves the problem of sewage disposal. Moreover, the rubbish matter…
