The Paleo Diet

There are plenty of diets which are believed to be good for health. The Paleo diet is one of them, which is based on a unique and interesting theory. It comes from the eating habit in the Paleaolithic times, and the proponents believe it is the best diet for modern people to keep themselves healthy.

Over 10,000 years ago, humans ate only what they hunt and gathered, such as animals, nuts and berries. It is after the advent of agriculture that humans began to eat grains, legumes, dairy and so on, which the Paleo diet proponents believe to cause various modern diseases such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes. They insist that going back to the ancient eating habit is reasonable because our body is originally created not to metabolize new types of foods.

They say it misses out on vital nutrients and could create long term health problems. In particular, adolescent girls have a risk of developing osteoporosis later in life due to lack of calcium. A biologist also says that it is doubtful if the Paleaolithic diet can be adapted to modern humans because there are no sufficient data on the early humans’ diet.

The concerns about the Paleo diet for infants became news in Australia. A recipe book of the Paleo diet had its release delayed by the federal health department. The book ‘Bubba Yum Yum’ had to be investigated because some recipes were considered to be inappropriate for infants. A professor commented that the Paleo diet was risky for children unless their parents monitored what they were eating all day.

The recommended foods in the Paleo diet may be good for today’s people. Also, some of the excluded foods have scientifically proven to be harmful for our health. However, it may be difficult to perfectly follow the ancient people’s diet, because we are living in a convenient modern society, where we can easily reach various delicious foods anytime,

    Osteoporosis has been associated with breakage in the hip, wrist, pelvis and other parts of the bones. Osteoporosis is more common in women than men and everyone has bone loss as they get older; however, consuming enough or adequate amounts of calcium early on in age can delay the effects of the bone loss. When there is not enough calcium absorbed in the body, the body begins to take away from the stored calcium in the bones in order to help maintain normal functions in the body, thus, causing the breakage in areas of the body. Supplements that contain calcium and vitamin D can help with the health problem and help or prevent many people from serious breakages when they fall. The FDA released a claim in 2003 stating that, "Adequate calcium throughout life, as part of a well-balanced diet, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis" and "Adequate calcium and vitamin D as part of a healthful diet, along with physical activity, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis in later life" (Office of Dietary Supplements, National Institutes of Health, n.d.). In order for a person to reduce the risk of osteoporosis, they must first consume the recommended daily dosage of calcium which starts out at 200 mg for a baby until they are six months old, than from six months to 12 months it becomes 260 mg. Once they become a year old it is recommended to consume 700 mg until the age of three, than from the age of four-eight it jumps up to 1,000 mg. Once they hit the age of nine it is recommended to consume 1,300 mg until a person reaches the age of 19, than it goes back down to 1,000 mg and that is adequate until the age of 51 for males and 70 for females.
