The book I read from the New Earth Archive was In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan. The book analyzed the foods we eat and talks about the traditional American diet. It says that this western diet is more harmful than beneficial despite the breakthrough in nutirionism. The reader soon learns that this growing obsession with nutritionism is ironically hurting our diet more than it is helping it. This obsession has led us to scientifically alter food to boost the level of vitamins and nutrients in our food; to make it “healthier.”
The problem with nutritionism is that we look at it from a micro perspective rather than looking at the food as a whole. For example, if we just look at Omega 3 and boost the amount of Omega 3 a food contains, we don’t consider how it will react with other nutrients and how a combination and balance of nutrients affect the overall impact the food has on our body. For this reason, Pollan highly advises taking nutrition admonitions with a grain of salt. He also advises that we steer away from process foods that make nutritional claims that talk about including extra nutrients. Pollan refers to such foods as “edible food-like substances.”
He talks about comparing different undeveloped groups’ eating habits to those of the westerner. The undeveloped groups who rely on hunting and foraging their food are plagued by fewer diseases than the westerner. The only reason the westerner outlives the members of these groups is because of the advancements in medicine we have made.
The book also talks about how nutritionism has caused an outbreak in “false marketing.” I put false marketing in quotations, because it isn’t exactly false, but it only tells a partial truth. For example, I’m sure most people have heard that dark chocolates contain antioxidants which are supposed to be healthy. Now let us look at the whole truth. First off, what is an antioxidant and what does it do? Most people would not be able to answer this question. Also, all food that grows out of the ground contains antioxidants, and since the cacao bean grows out of the ground, it contains antioxidants. So what we have learned so far is that there are actually healthier alternatives to obtaining these antioxidants. So why market chocolate? Because it is a food that was once thought to be very unhealthy, and by marketing it as nutritious, consumers will think that they can eat something that tastes really good and is “healthy.” But you don’t see companies marketing the sugars and the fats in these chocolates. This is because doing so would be considered marketing suicide.
Overall, I found this book to be very interesting. It was very informative and made me look at what I eat from a whole new perspective.

    People are often at odds to choose between food like organic verses inorganic food or products. And what is the difference and is one actually better for you or is just there to makes it easier for you to justify eating it If you think one is not using the industrial food chain. After reading "The Omnivore's Dilemma", my own personal opinion about the food industry and that many Americans don’t know how or how our food is even processed and grown or raised or how it gets to the grocery store. An example I love is my mom is a kindergarten teacher and she was doing a lesson on food and where our food comes from and the kids new that food comes from a grocery store and that was it. They had no clue that they food they eat had to be grown somewhere else and then brought to the store for them to buy. The next question was who like chicken nuggets and they all raise their hands and then she asked what is a chicken nugget and none of them could answer her. When my mom said they come chickens all they kids were grossed out and said they don’t eat chickens. This just shows today that kids aren’t being told how their food gets to their plate and I feel that this is a very important concept for people to know not just kids.     I reexamined the foods i've been consuming and became astounded. Looking at something as classic as bread, a food that used to contain only a few ingredients, now contains dozens. The effects of the industrialization are all around us, especially in our food. I was unaware that products that make health claims aren't exactly healthy and was surprised to find all of the tricks and loopholes the FDA allows. The rules regarding wording are ambiguous, thus making the health claims on foods almost frivolous. This book examined the diet fads of the past in America such as when margarine was considered to be healthier than butter. I’ve learned that we come up with a new diet plan and find “stunning” data that will better our health all the time, but our health has yet to make a drastic improvement. While we continue to consume the Western Diet, we look for ways to outsmart it rather than do the obvious thing and move away from it. Ultimately, I came away from the book with far more knowledge then when I entered. The book offered great incite into the food industry and how it all works. He proposes a new answer to what we should and should not eat. He states that it comes down to seven simple words: Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.     And while I agree that it is easier to be unhealthy in today’s world, it is also incredibly easier to be healthy. There are thousands of options for food in the world, and it is a person’s choice to be either healthy or unhealthy. It is a person’s choice to go to McDonald’s or to go to the grocery store or local market and buy their own food. In the article we read from Chris Otter , “Feast and Famine: The Global Food Crisis”, he mentions several times the affects that food has on America in particular. The malnutrition in our country comes from over eating. While both articles state that the world has a problem that involves rich countries overeating, and poor countries starving, that is still a choice of those countries, even the poor ones. They choose to export all of their goods and harvests to other countries in exchange for food. And while that statement can be argued and supported in a million different ways, that is not the point of this paper. The truth is that Diamond seems to be just throwing out one side of a given argument without even the slightest acknowledgement of the other. Malnutrition was around with the start of humans. There are bad foods in the world as they are. Fruits have tons of sugar in them, and a diet of just fruit and meat in ancient times could not have been great for them. Not to mention, most communities only really had one source of food, so they ended up eating a lot of the same thing. If you ask any doctor, nutritionist, or medical official, they will tell you that no matter what foods are being consumed; there is no health in eating the same thing over and over again. So if the ancient communities stayed relatively in the same areas for the majority of their lives, they would not have had as great of a diet as Diamond makes it out to be.     However, the unhealthy lifestyle should not be presented as something that is thoroughly impossible to tackle, before the food and diet industry have been brought to their knees. Each individual can change the society, since currently; everyone can gain a powerful voice through social media.
