ASSESSMENT TASK 2 –
The Outsider: Othello and The Catcher in the Rye

Date Due: Term 2, Thursday and Friday Week 1 (a roster of when students will be speaking will be distributed)
Weighting: 20%

In your answer you will be assessed on how well you: demonstrate understanding of the ideas expressed in Othello and The Catcher in the Rye evaluate the texts’ use of language, structure and medium organise, develop and express ideas using language appropriate to audience, purpose and form.

Option 1:
The outsider often feels that 'truth must be told at all costs, otherwise there can be no hope for an ultimate restoration of order…truth must be told, chaos must be faced’.

Option 2:
'The Outsider's fundamental attitude [is] non-acceptance of life…in a human society … there is no way out or round or through’.

Choose ONE of the above quotes then answer the following question.

In the context of your texts, to what extent to do you agree with this statement?

Write and deliver a 6 minute speech you would present to Year 11 students.

In your speech you must support your evaluation with a detailed analysis of BOTH of your prescribed texts.

You will also be required to include some understanding of the Area of Study as a result of your reading of Colin Wilson.

You will submit your speech as an A4 document to your teacher at the start of Thursday Week 1’s class.
