Confronting and Provocative Discoveries in "Life of Pi" and "Memorial"
Discoveries can be both confronting and provocative, leading us to speculate about future possibilities. To what extent is this true in you prescribed texts and AT LEAST 1 TEXT OF YOUR OWN
CHOOSING.
Discoveries will give insight about the future and its possibilities to a person who is seeking it, and it will either be provocative or confronting. This is seen in both the movie
‘Life Of Pi’ directed by Ang Lee, and in the short story ‘Memorial’ composed by Gary
Crew and illustrated by Shaun Tan. In the ‘Life Of Pi’, the scene when Pissin in the church he takes the water that was being offered to him by the priest, gives insight to
Pissin believing in Christianity, also when Pissin finds a human tooth on the carnivorous island, it gave him an insight to what was going to happen to him if he didn’t leave the island as soon as possible. As seen in Life of Pi how discoveries will either confronting or provocative it is also seen in Memorial, when the unnamed boy feels like he is connected to the recurring motif it gives insight to what he later says about the government/ council when they manipulated it and defile it. Also when the little boy finds out about his grandfather's past its foreshadows what he is later about to say about grand father in the end of the text.
(how do i end this off????) For a discovery to be provocative it must lead you outside of your comfort zone and make you do what you normally don’t do. For something to provoke you, this means that it has interrupted your usual day to day activities and behaviour. This is portrayed in
Life of Pi, when Ang lee uses irony to provoke Pissin to leave the island, he achieved this through how the land fed of the living inhabitants, and not the other way around.
Pissin finds himself in a dangerous and unusual predicament when he finds the human tooth in a lotus flower on the carnivorous island, this led him to realizes that he can no longer stay on the island because it will
