Organizational Structure Analysis
This paper will describe my current occupation and the type of organization that I work for. I will analyze the organizational structure of the organization at my current place of employment and determine if it is a functional structure or a divisional structure. I will discuss the rationale behind its structure, issues that may be caused due to its organizational structure type, and my recommendations in response to the effects that I find. Before one can understand the type of organizational structure of a company, they must first have a basic understanding of what an organizational structure is and the different types that are available. Below, I will give a brief description of a functional structure and a divisional structure.

We also support the courthouse downtown, the juvenile detention center and the juvenile court. All of these entities fall under the county but operate efficiently and effectively on their own. In lamer terms, the county itself would be considered the headquarters and we are the stepchildren. We use some services (i.e. cell phone account & network resources) that they provide, but we are still responsible for the survival of the DKSO and the entities that we support. One of the pros of a having a divisional structure at the DKSO is the cohesion when it comes to completing a difficult task. This cohesion was exemplified by the HR and IT department coming together to develop a plan that would utilize new technology to complete interviews for the promotion of employees. What could have been a long process was alleviated by technology and the allowance of several interviews to be completed at once by the incorporation of laptops and a web browser. Gillikin (n.d) mentions in his article titled Advantages & Disadvantages of Divisional Organizational Structure that competition amongst divisions is a major issue that will be prominent in a divisional structure. I have noticed competition first hand at the DKSO. The most common example of this comes when different divisions allocate different resources that another division may rely on. The Director of Fiscal Management may not want to purchase another computer for the Education Department. The lack of equipment may indirectly result in an increase of inmate disturbances and could possibly lead to an increase of inmate altercations due to boredom. This will cause an influx on the workload of the medical staff. If any department feels as though they have been neglected, they “accidentally” damage equipment that is necessary for the jail or the sheriff office to function effectively.
