Purchasing organically grown food is the only way to avoid dangerous chemicals and hormones that are present in commercially grown food. More than 600 active chemicals are registered for agricultural use in America annually. The average application equates to about 16 pounds of chemical pesticides per person every year. Another harmful effect that GMOs have on the environment is that they increase herbicide use, which allows for more toxins to be present. For example, the company Monsanto produces a herbicide known as Roundup, and the company then sells Roundup Ready crops, which are designed to survive the implementation of Roundup (Smith). The overuse of Roundup, however, results in superweeds that are resistant to the herbicide, which causes farmers to use even more toxic herbicides every year (Smith). Many American’s are concerned for the farmers, the environment, and the potential health risks of GMOs and are demanding more studies and tests be done before allowing these organisms to be consumed. There are some alarming differences between organic and processed foods especially when considering agriculture. “Organic” means that a food is grown without the aid of pesticides or fertilizers. Organic farmers use manure and nothing else to grow fruits, vegetables, and grains. It says in The Organic Myth that this can lead to some bad cases of E.
