Douglas J. Futuyma on the limits of science: [[S]cience seeks to explain only objective knowledge], [knowledge that can be acquired independently by different investigators if they follow a prescribed course of observation or experiment]. [Many human experiences and concerns are not objective] and (so) [do not fall within the realm of science]. (As a result), **[science has nothing to say about aesthetics or morality]**….[The functioning of human society, then, clearly requires principles that stem from some source other than science.]

From a newspaper call-in column: [My opinion regarding the amount of homework a child receives is basically threefold]. **[I don’t believe the children should receive any homework whatsoever]**. One, (because) [the teacher has seven or eight hours during the course of the school day to instruct children and do work assignments with them, to review material for tests. [They do not need to be sending work home]. To me, [homework is an excuse for the teacher’s lack of ability to do their job properly]. [That places too many children at a disadvantage compared to other children who have their parents there to help them with their homework]. Let’s imagine waking up super early in the morning, then making your way to a place that’s complete chaos, called School, then going through seven class periods, seven slow hours. Doing tons of work in classes working hard. So when the day is finally over you’re just ready to go home and relax, not to do stressful, super hard homework that you were given that day. I believe teachers should give less homework for many reasons. One being, us students get overwhelmed when we have too much homework. If homework for one class takes us 45 minutes up to an hour, imagine doing homework for all seven classes that you attend. Another reason being children would have more times for activities outside of school, such as sports, family time, or even academic activities outside of school, if they didn’t have so much homework to finish. High School kids don’t get as much sleep as they should because they are up doing countless amounts of homework for the maximum of seven classes, and if we aren’t doing homework were studying for a test or possibly even multiple tests we might have the following day. More work doesn’t mean necessarily mean more learning. Assigning more homework isn’t helping us students learn more, especially if it’s really overwhelming and we don’t understand how to do it, so we don’t. If teachers limited the quantity of how much homework we had, then they would receive better quality back, meaning if you assign us less homework/decrease how long the assignments are, and then you can expect us to do more quality work on what you do assign. Family time is valuable. We want to be able to truly spend time with our family members in the evenings, but we can’t accomplish that because homework takes up all that time we would have normally used. And, yes, I know that for lots of students it’s the TV that’s their companion at night instead of their parents. But that’s not how it is with all the students.…

Finally, homework is very demanding on kids. “In most U.S schools, homework has become more demanding and time-consuming (scope magazine, pages 20-21, lines 33-35). Studies have shown that most kids feel very stressed about schoolwork and homework. There is a lot of pressure to do well in school. Some kids feel like “if they don’t get help from their parents, they will be at a competitive disadvantage with classmates who do.” (scope magazine, pages 20-21, lines 69-72).…

Whether it be because the kids are not getting their homework done and getting in trouble, or them learning to cheat. Having homework can cause stress on the kids that have a lot to do. They might have sports to go alongside their piles of homework. They learn to cheat off friends in order to manage their homework. In the article it states that when kids have a lot to do and little time to do it, they find alternative ways to do things to get them done faster. The main way they usually end up finding is to cheat of friends. (“5 Reasons Kids Need Homework and 5 Reasons They Don't”). Not only is cheating a bad thing, it also leads to all kinds of bad habits like laziness and lying. And when they do not get caught, they feel rewarded for something they did not do, encouraging more cheating. Home work does not increase overall scores of each class. In the article it states, “Researchers at the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education found in a 2012 study that math and science homework didn’t correlate to better student grades, but it did lead to better performances on standardized tests. And when homework is assigned, the help provided by parents often mitigated any of the positive effects of the work. Critics of this type of parental involvement say it can be counterproductive because parents may assume too great a role and/or may not fully understand the lessons being taught” (Graham). This research shows that having homework is counterproductive because the parents end up doing too much of the homework for the kids. Also, the study shows that the overall grades of the kids did not increase. The other side of this argument may argue that they increased scores on standardized tests, but that does not matter when their grades are still not increasing. Stress can be a major problem for tots at a young age. When it comes to stress, 70% of students said they were often stressed…

Homework can be stressful enough that it can make students drop out of school because students spend too much time working instead of doing things enjoyable. Things I would rather do are shooting hoops, playing football, riding my bike, or playing games. Sometimes they push themselves to do more and finally they just quit school. The result of that is since they don’t have any education they get less paying jobs. Most students think homework is just plain out STUPID and it isn’t needed. For example exponents (used in math) aren’t needed because I asked my mom when she has used them in life and she said never. All of these things can lead to a child dropping out of school.…

Homework is pointless because kids do enough work in school and they don't need more. When they come home they want to chill out, hang out with friends, or do something. Kids are in school for 8 hours a day doing work, other than lunch and recess. Homework is not relevant for kids. I did a survey at school at resource, and a majority of kids say that homework should be banned in school because it is stressful and they procrastinate until the last second. There is no point in homework. It takes away from spending time with family. According to the text with research 'Homework Should be Banned,' “Schools has increased from 9 to 3 with 1 ½ hour of recess and lunch to 8:40 to 3:15 with only 30 minutes of lunch and recess.” This quote shows that too…

Homework is an infringement on family time. Many of the big media that would otherwise say that homework is important also decry the fact that kids aren’t spending enough time talking with their families. It is not possible to create an atmosphere of deep family connection when the parents and the students are all working three or four hours a night at home. You need many hours’ together, playing games, reading books, fixing the house together, going to movies, cooking for friends to have a balanced family life. Being together only on weekends is a crime.…

According to Farlex of the free dictionary, homework is a work, such as schoolwork or piecework that is done at home. In 2014, different news is spreading regarding the increase of number of schools in United States of America which have already banned home works given to students. Issues about banning of home works nowadays have been intriguing and alarming since there is a booming of the number of students as well as parents who are complaining about the loaded assigned tasks to students to be brought and accomplished at home, including the reasons why home works should be abolished. However, the proponents of home works remained constant with the relevance of home works to students and why home works should not be banned.…

Teachers these days are giving way too much homework and it’s little to no good. Studies show that less than one percent of students think homework is not a stressor. The average sleep time for students decreases from 7.6 to 6.9 hours from grades 9 to 12. Richard Walker, an educational psychologist at Sydney University, shows that there is no correlation between amount of time spent doing homework and test scores. This is important to all students and teachers because teachers give students a large amount of homework for no reason. Should teachers give students homework? No, teachers should not give student homework. Teachers should not give any homework because there is less time for students extracurricular pursuits, students are losing sleep over homework, homework adds large amounts of stress, it does more bad than good to grades, and it does not actually help reinforce what is learned in school. Teachers often do not realize how much their homework affects their students.…
