Evolution of optical fiber

1880 – Alexander Graham Bell
1930 – Patents on tubing
1950 – Patent for two-layer glass wave-guide
1960 – Laser first used as light source
1965 – High loss of light discovered
1970s – Refining of manufacturing process
1980s – OF technology becomes backbone of long distance telephone networks in NA.

What is optical Fiber?
• An optical fiber is a hair thin cylindrical fiber of glass or any transparent dielectric medium.
• The fiber which are used for optical communication are wave guides made of transparent dielectrics.
• Its function is to guide visible and infrared light over long distances.

Structure of optical fiber

• Core – central tube of very thin size made up of optically transparent dielectric medium and carries the light form transmitter to receiver. The core diameter can vary from about 5um to 100 um.
• Cladding – outer optical material surrounding the core having reflecting index lower than core. It helps to keep the light within the core throughout the phenomena of total internal reflection.
• Buffer Coating – plastic coating that protects the fiber made of silicon rubber. The typical diameter of fiber after coating is 250-300 um.

Working principle
Total Internal Reflection
• When a ray of light travels from a denser to a rarer medium such that the angle of incidence is greater than the critical angle, the ray reflects back into the same medium this phenomena is called total internal reflection. • In the optical fiber the rays undergo repeated total number of reflections until it emerges out of the other

Attenuation can be losses attributed to microscopic and macroscopic impurities in the fiber material and structure, which cause absorption and scattering of the light signal. Attenuation is a function of the wavelength, and the loss is usually stated in dB/km. Attenuation can be caused by improper connections, bend radius and…

LED transmitters These fibre optic transmitters are cheap and reliable. They emit only incoherent light with a relatively wide spectrum as a result of the fact that the light is generated by a method known as spontaneous emission. A typical LED used for optical communications may have its light output in the range 30 - 60 nm. In view of this the signal will be subject to chromatic dispersion, and this will limit the distances over which data can be transmitted…

Summary and Recommendations: ODI Inc wants to launch a product that is completely new, technologically advanced and performs well as demonstrated in the initial tests. The ODI lens helps farmers by controlling cannibalization among birds at farms. Cannibalization is an issue that is more prevalent in farms with a large number of chickens as they fight for food and their territory. ODI lens helps in distorting the vision of the chicken and thereby curbing both these issues without causing much trauma to the chicken. The existing method to minimize cannibalization is debeaking, however, the use of the lens enables a farmer to save up to $0.24 per hen. Therefore, keeping the initial capital constraint of $200,000, the best target segment for market entry of the product will be the large farms in California which have over 100,000 birds. The same can be done with minimal staff and negligible advertising. Second year onwards, ODI should start foraying into all farms with a flock size of over 20,000 located in the states in Pacific Region. These entries should be made with the product priced at $0.20.…

By permanently inserting a pair of sight distorting lenses into the eyes of an egg-laying hen, studies have shown that cannibalization can be reduced from 9% to 4.5%. Moreover, feed loss due to “billing” is substantially reduced relative to debeaked birds, allowing for much greater efficiency in feed consumption (less waste). Finally, given that lens insertion does not inflict the same trauma that debeaking does, egg production is not adversely affected.…

To take a look back on this course and its overall impact it had I would have to say that it was very interesting and informative. This being my first time actually using Microsoft Access it was an interesting journey through these past eight weeks but it was a good interesting. The majority of databases I’ve dealt with have been Microsoft Excel in these last few years, they have been in areas of troop rosters and scheduling to training and other qualifications but besides that nothing in the lines of Access. After working with this program I do find it being very resourceful with its capabilities that it provides in the means of its information distribution especially over other programs that can be pulled in by copying their projects and tables actually into Access. I feel having the knowledge of using Access can be a huge resource for any company looking for a records manager which are most companies and from using Access these last few weeks I’ve found that the limits are endless with what can be done inside this program.…
