Odysseus
“Odysseus is too thoughtless, selfish and deceitful to be a real hero.” How far do you agree with this view?
Yes, I do agree that Odysseus was thoughtless, selfish and deceitful but these qualities were necessary for him to complete his journey and be seen as a hero on his return to Ithaca. Greek heroes like Odysseus were greater than the average man and achieved much notoriety and fame by being thoughtless, selfish and deceitful. Inevitability Odysseus, curiosity led him to make bad decisions after all he was only human and not a god. This is important to remember because without these character flaws Odysseus would have looked to perfect to be a hero.
An example of his character flaws is that of him being thoughtless when he sacked the Island of Ismarus with his men, this decision led to him losing 72 of his men and many more casualties. His actions also upset the Gods whom made his journey home even more difficult. Another incident is when he sent three of his men to search the land of the lotus eaters without thinking of their safety. His thoughtless action nearly lost him some of his crew.
His curiosity also led him to make foolish decisions like when Odysseus went to explore the island of the Cyclops and foolishly entered Polyphemus’s cave uninvited which disrespected the rules of xenia. His thoughtless decision caused the death of 6 of his loyal men. Odysseus was also keen to show off so that he could feel more important than everyone else around him, when he told the Cyclops to mention his name if asked who blinded him.
Odysseus is also a deceitful and selfish hero when on the island of Aeolia the God of wind Aeolus, gave Odysseus a bag of wind to speed up his journey home. He did not tell his crew what was in the bag, which shows he does not trust his men. This also led to them opening the bag while Odysseus was asleep to see if any valuables were inside. The consequence of this was that the ship was blown back to the island of Aeolia which further

Odysseus was no hero and his words and actions clearly show. Book 1 of the Odyssey starts with “Sing in the, Muse, and through me tell the story of that man skilled in all ways of contending”. Introducing Odysseus as “a man skilled in all ways of contending” shows Homer, author of the Odyssey clearly wanted Odysseus to be seen as a hero. After all, they were both Greek, and the Greeks held a lot of pride they needed to protect. This makes me believe that the story behind The Odyssey was twisted so that the reader was forced to see from the perspective the author wanted.…

When one thinks of a hero, one thinks of a good hearted person. Someone who saves lives and is righteous. An epic hero like Odysseus is not the two dimensional character found in Grimm’s Fairy Tales. He exhibits both traits of a hero and a villain. While clever and determined, Odysseus is unfaithful and selfish. Although revered in the past, Odysseus is not so glorious today.…

Furthermore, Odysseus was a bad leader and led to his men’s destruction because he had blindly sacrificed them. A hero is normally someone who helps others; not just worries about themselves. In that chapter when they are on the island of Circe, Odysseus had no intention of leaving anytime soon because he was gifted with shelter and food. The book said, “So all that day till the sun went down we sat and feasted on sides of meat and heady wine. Then when the sun had set and night cmaae on the men lay down to sleep in the shadowed halls but I went up to that luxurious bed of Circe’s” (Homer, 245). Moreover, there was also another instance where Odysseus killed a suitor who had begged for mercy. “‘ I hug your knees Odysseus - mercy! spare my life! Never, i swear did I harass any woman in your house - never a word, a gesture - nothing, no, I tried to restrain the suitors, whoever did such things’”(Homer, 449).Odysseus was taking his anger out by killing this man instead of thinking how other people felt first. As stated before, a true hero would never put himself first. However, this is exactly how he acted. Conjointly, in book ten, a king gives Odysseus a bag of wind to help guide them home. He did not mention this to the Achaeans so once they found the bag, they were curious to what was inside it. Homer wrote, “They loosed the sack and all the winds burst out and a sudden squall struck and swept us back to sea” (Homer, 232). If Odysseus thought of others before himself, he would tell the crew that he had this with him. If the crew knew what was inside, they most likely would not have opened…

I believe Odysseus to be a hero, because all his flaws are what make him human. He is not a god, so he will make mistakes. His intelligence saves him and his men’s lives, and he does not give up. He was a great leader and was willing to pay a price for knowledge. He recognized that knowledge really is power, and decides to learn everything he can on his journey home. He also acknowledges that sometimes lying, cheating, and stealing might sometimes be necessary. That is what makes him human. “He achieves both kleos and nostos in the end and doesn’t have to die for either”…

In conclusion, Odysseus is not a hero. Heros are supposed to be role models, not god-angering crew killers. In fact, Odysseus himself barely survived his journey. Heros must influence society by proving how doing the right thing and being a commerable citizen leads to a happy things. When we accept someone as a hero, we also accept their flaws. Odysseus just has too many flaws to accept as a true…

These flaws include the fact that he loses his men and the fact that he boasts about himself and commits blasphemy toward Poseidon when he says, "I am sure that even great Poseidon will never give you back the eye you lost" (Odyssey, Book IX, page 185). Nevertheless, this does nothing but adds to the idea of Odysseus being the ideal hero in the ancient Greek society. He is a mortal hero, a human, and humans have flaws. This again goes back to where we talk about the transition in the Greek society. The Greeks now embrace their mortality, they are not afraid of it. Even with his flaws, Odysseus achieves his goals and he is definitely the ideal hero for many generations to follow. The people can look to Odysseus as being a hero that they can relate to; unlike the previous perfect and unrealistic heroes, such as Hercules, that could only be…

Thought Odysseus journey towards home he has displayed the characteristic of being selfish, arrogant, and is making rash decisions that affect others; His actions lead to the death of his crew and the suitors. A heroic person is someone who does courageous acts for the sake of his family and peers. When Odysseus had the option of traveling through Scylla or Charybdis; he chooses Scylla knowing that she would kill six members of his crew. “Voices came down to me in anguish, calling my name for the last time” (727) Odysseus thinks to himself as he watches his crew mates are being eaten. This shows that Odysseus is only looking out for himself instead of taking chances and going through Charybdis. Also when Odysseus and twelve members of his crew go looking for a treasure on the Cyclops Island Odysseus wants to see the Cyclops with his own eyes. The Cyclops captures them and “went on filling up his belly with manflesh and great gulps of whey” (194). This shows that Odysseus makes careless mistakes like visiting the Cyclops that killed the members of his crew. The way Odysseus fights the Cyclops by stabbing him in his eye and lying about his name also shows that he is impulsive liar. When Odysseus returns home he has to battle with the suitors for Penelope. “When the time comes, those gentlemen, to a man will be dead against me bow or quiver” Odysseus wins and kills the other suitors. This shows that Odysseus is arrogant and was showing off his ability to shoot a bow and arrow. Odysseus is not worthy of admiration or respect because of his non heroic decisions that harmed…

Odysseus shows that he is a flawed and lucky man when he encounters Polyphemus, the cyclops. Odysseus shows he is flawed and lucky because when he got away from Polyphemus, he gets carried away with pride. For example, when Odysseus says, "Cyclops, if ever a mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye: Laertes' son, whose home's on Ithaca!" [456-460] Odysseus gets carried away with pride, therefore giving away his identity. Polyphemus, afterwards, puts a curse upon Odysseus an his men. Polyphemus shows Odysseus' mortal qualities.…
