Observation and Children
Observation of the Classroom

The way a classroom is designed is very important in order for a classroom to run smoothly. It is important to have enough toys, furniture and space to keep children happy. After observing a preschool room, other than my own; I learned how I can improve my own classroom. The preschool environment seemed very well organized and the teachers were in control. The classroom observed had all the necessary areas of a preschool room. The room had a house keeping/dramatic play area as well as a block area, writing, science, computer, music, reading, circle, manipulative and art areas. All of the areas were appropriately spaced out and comfortable for the children. The house keeping/dramatic play area was the first visible area one would see when entering the class. This area includes a play stove and refrigerator with plastic food. On the wall were different pieces of clothing that represented various professions and cultures. This area also includes dolls, strollers and a mirror for the children to look in. Through this area students are able to develop their intrapersonal skills through roll play. The next area was the block area. This area had a variety of blocks constructed by such materials as wooden, plastic, and cardboard. The blocks also varied in size, shape and color. This area also included many toy cars and trucks. Although this area was a bit cramped, the children were offered a wide variety of choice. This classroom has a writing area, which is a rarity in most preschool rooms. This area was full of lined paper and pencils for the children to practice their writing skills. This wasn't a large area because it only held the supplies. The children knew to take the supplies needed to do their writing back to the table to write. The next area was the science area. There was not much in this small area. There was a magnet table for the children to play with. The shelves in

To maintain a commitment to professionalism I will introduce daily opportunities for the children within the classroom to explore their surrounding world through play, examination, art and science activities and much more. The children will be encouraged to explore each center within the classroom; these centers will be set up based upon the theme of the week. There will be an art center, a library, a block area, a home living center, and a manipulative and science/sensory center within the classroom. At times some of these centers may be changed according to the theme plan for the week.…

I believe children learn best through discovery and play. I arranged my room knowing that when children feel comfortable in their physical surroundings, they will venture to explore materials or events around them. My room allows for the children to be engaged and feel secure, and facilitates predictable, consistent and intimate care for each child. My room design guides and encourages children to learn through play while shaping their beliefs about themselves and life.…

We will now review one of the Aistear videos named Planning and Organising Play. The video is produced by an infant teacher. The teacher looks at pedagogical framing and her experiences of planning and organising her own classroom. There are many excellent suggestions as to how to set up play in a class room environment which I will explain next, however there are one or two weaknesses that if I was given the opportunity I would change to this video. Overall the video is very helpful and it does give excellent advice from an experienced infant teacher that would be like gold dust to an inexperienced teacher new to this profession.…

An effective preschool classroom is defined as a healthy and safety environment where the child is well cared for. I am strict on making sure that the child feels valued in their search for attention, approval, and affection. It is also a place where children can develop a sense of passion for knowledge and skills for success. I create many lesson plans each week in every subject area…

The classroom that I had the opportunity of seeing had a kitchen and a diaper changing/potty room. There were many different play stations such as a dress up area, a puppet area, a reading area, and a sandbox area. Each play station was small and designated by shelving. The setup promotes corporative play and increases verbal interactions. The setup seems to work well and is organized.…

This particular Head Start classroom was a Pre-K classroom, full of energetic four year olds. There were desks arranged in a semi-circle facing a table where two of the teachers sat, while a teacher’s desk was located near the back of the room so it would not be a focal point for the students. Twenty-three students were in attendance (although the class usually had twenty-seven). The teachers had different materials spread out throughout the room, including a play kitchen area, a small library, a carpet area for the students to sit on during presentations, and there was a more “masculine” play area as well near the teacher’s desk, which featured toy trucks and cars, but also building blocks for the students to build whatever their imagination inspired.…

It was playtime for the one year old boy. There were all sorts of toys. The playroom was very small. There was a huge toy chest full to the top with toys. On the wall there was a body length mirror. This was the little boys favorite place to play. He would also play with some of the other toys like blocks, cars, stuffed animals and other things. No matter what he grabbed he always brought it in front of the mirror.…

Setting: I observed Anna, age four years and five months, on March 24, 2006, at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church Preschool. I observed for two and one-half hours from 9:15 am to 11:45 am. The preschool has three teachers and a full enrollment of 24 children, ages four and five, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. They also have 24 children, age three, on Tuesday and Thursday. On the Friday that I visited, there were 21 children in attendance. There is a large enclosed play area outside. There is a large covered sandbox area with several toys including large plastic scoops, a large metal spoon, plastic bowls, shovels and buckets, a large play structure with a slide and climbing apparatus, a log cabin play house with several tools; such as plastic hammers, wrenches, and saws. There is a big sidewalk that goes around the perimeter of the yard where the children ride the tricycles. There are six tricycles but they were not out for use on the day that I observed. Inside there are many areas for playing and learning. There is a small room that has a cradle, dolls, blankets, dress-up clothes and shoes for girls, child size furniture; table, sink, dishes, and other kitchen items. Also kept in this room is a large roll of paper that can be cut to any length for drawing and painting. In this room is where one of the teachers meets for story time with her group of eight children. The large room is divided into two parts for the other two teachers and their groups when it is story time. The accordion divider is opened when the individual group time is over. In the large room are many different activity stations; easel with two sides for drawing with markers and paints, a fish tank with several fish, papers and crayons, table with small wooden puzzles with numbers on the pieces, small hard rubber birds, owls, and pelicans, a table with a hard plastic surface that lights up, a table with rocks and a magnifying glass, a table with Legos, an area for wooden…

I observed preschool classrooms at St. Vincent’s Catholic School They are a Montessori preschool. The classrooms are clearly laid out for children. The classrooms are prepared and equipped for the size and pace of preschool aged children and are designed to put them at ease by giving them freedom in an environment carefully prepared with attractive materials arranged on low shelves that can be reached by any child. The tables and chairs are moveable so as to allow a variety of activities and the children work on small rugs on the floor where they are naturally comfortable. In our classrooms, there is no front of the…
