Statement of Competence Goal VI

Maintaining a Commitment to Professionalism

Professionalism

To maintain a commitment to professionalism I will introduce daily opportunities for the children within the classroom to explore their surrounding world through play, examination, art and science activities and much more. The children will be encouraged to explore each center within the classroom; these centers will be set up based upon the theme of the week. There will be an art center, a library, a block area, a home living center, and a manipulative and science/sensory center within the classroom. At times some of these centers may be changed according to the theme plan for the week.

A lesson plan will be posted for the parents to view each week. At the end of the day there is a daily event note posted on the door to let each parent view what we did during the day. Also, a “toddler gram/infant gram” note will go home with each child stating the art activity, the science/sensory activity, the gross motor activity (outside play), as well as diaper change/potty time, what we had for a snack and lunch, and any reminders for the following day. We have incorporated a monthly calendar. Each parent may take this home to give them an idea of the theme that we will be doing each week, any important dates that are coming up, and any reminders that may be needed.

Twice per year there are conference times set up for the parents to meet with teachers regarding to the progress of their child and what we will be working on for the remainder of the year. The parents are encouraged to attend one or both of these. If the parents have questions or concerns, they are encouraged to ask at anytime, whether it is daily or at the time of the conferences. Also if a parent would like to have a consultation before or after the arranged times, they are encouraged to seek this opportunity at any time.

For personal growth I will attend any workshop that will encourage and

Each morning I ensure that I greet each child and parent when they arrive. In greeting the child I will always address the child by his/her name and encourage the other children to say good morning. I would hold optional parent-meeting bimonthly, though politely approaching the parents to attend at least one of the brief meetings. However, it is important to note that the vast majority of parents have varying, jampacked schedules. Therefore, in an effort to accommodate their needs and ensure they are up to date on classroom events, I would send out weekly newsletters. I would also provide the option of a hard-copy or email updates. Some parents prefer to have a hard-copy of the events so they can “see it on paper”, whereas other parents would simply prefer to have it emailed to them. For the parents that prefers to have hardcopies, I would send it home with the children in their take-home packets and follow up with the parents to ensure they have received them. The email newsletter would be a simple mass email, though I would also send individualized emails to parents as need be. Family-capacity building can be defined as “when professionals work in close collaboration with families to uncover each family members’ goals and wishes for the children” (p. 248). Family-capacity building is unique to each family because each family has a different dynamic and operates differently. I have not had the opportunity to try out any of these strategies yet, though I hope they can reach a wide variety of families, particularly when they seem distant or uninvolved in the classroom. Interacting…

I do my part to maintain a well run purposeful program, responsive to participant needs. On their first day in our program, I make an effort to meet and greet our clients, the parents as well as the children. I ask the parents if they need any special requirements, accommodations or modifications to better service their children. I also ask the children which games they enjoy, and see if they have any questions for me about the program. This gives them an opportunity to know we have familiar activities that they are used to, gives them a chance to share their fears and worries about the program, and they also to get to know me a little better. With this information from the children, parents and our director, the counselors and I work together as planners, getting our weekly schedules for the children and taking turns delegating the activities. We come up with our own plans and put them together to form a enriched learning program.…

To establish positive and productive relationships with families I believe it’s very important to keep communication open. Families have the right to know: the program goals; philosophy; expectations for children, families, and staff operating assumptions and practices that will accomplish the goals’ and how resources are allocated to achieve goals. There are several ways I will communicate with the families about these things and what might be going on with their child. Some vehicles of information I may use might include notes, journals, conferences, documentation panels, displayed planning forms and objectives, web pages, and meetings. I will also talk with…
