Nutritional Evaluation Through Fit Day Module
Nutritional Evaluation

Nancy Lapointe

NS 325

March 31, 2013

Nutrition has always been a big part of my life even prior to becoming a nurse. On a daily basis I am using nutrition in some way or another to teach my patients or learn something about myself. I usually follow the latest nutritional news because and I am a firm believer that diet is key in health and healing.NS325 has been a very useful and knowledgeable course because I can personally relate to it and can apply much of the information learned to my own life and career. The Diet Analysis project was wonderful because it gave me a first hand look at my own diet habits. My actual intakes of the different food groups were somewhat near what the "My
Pyramid" had recommended. I was within range for grains, vegetables and fruits ("My pyramid tracker," ). There is not enough dairy or specifically milk in my diet. It is evident that from this evaluation that I am eating appropriately from the food groups except dairy. I will need to adjust my diet so that I will consume more milk less carbohydrates and fats. I live the typical American diet and I generally eat meat at least 2 meals a day. One thing I will consider is eating smaller portions of carbohydrates, and will substitute vegetables when available. I also need to cut back on junk foods, high fat foods such as peanut butter and ice creams. I mainly consume these higher calorie and fat foods because of their convenience, but I can easily substitute fruit for unhealthy snacks. Nutritional charting shows my diet is high in vitamin A B6, B12, copper, iron, potassium, low in C D, E calcium, magnesium, manganese niacin phosphorous and riboflavin selenium sodium, thiamin and zinc. cholesterol no RDA but actual intake is 185.16 mg.

2459 is the calorie count that is recommended for me and I have logged an average consumption of 1987. In order to maintain weight the required caloric intake is

    4. A recommendation says fat should contribute not more than 30 percent of total energy. How does your fat intake compare with this level? If it is higher, look over your food records: what specific foods could you cut down on or eliminate and what foods could you add to your diet to ring your total fat intake into line?…

    2) Per Table 1-3, I should be consuming 2000 calories per day but luckily I came in at 1,764 for today. I did eat the correct number of servings in every food group except for dairy. I am lactose intolerant and actually do not like milk, so I have a hard time meeting the requirements for that food group. I do take a calcium, vitamin D supplement to make up for what I am missing.…

Overlap: when referring to a single nutrient, my dietary fiber intake in grams which can be related to vegetable and fruit groups on Myplate report is below the recommendation, and Myplate states the similar fact about my intakes of vegetable and fruit groups. Secondly, nutrient-based summary shows that my diet lacks of many micronutrients, such as vitamin A, folate, and calcium where can be found largely from dairy foods, and the Myplate also signals that the dairy group is significantly lower than the recommendation.…

The results for my new diet when compared to the recommendations from the SuperTracker are very bad indeed. I am not eating enough grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy or protein foods. An average for the amount of grains I consumed was 6 and a half ounces which is 2 servings each of these days. I consumed one and a half cup of fruits and vegetables which is about 2 servings on Saturday. I did not eat any other fruit during this three day period. I also consumed a quarter cup of dairy. From the proteins foods group, I consumed 2 and a half ounces and from the oils groups which is not a serving at all, but when this measured is about 2 teaspoons.…

Some of the ways I can work on these things is make sure I eat more in all the areas of the pyramid, with the grains I will eat more pastas, whole grain breads, crackers and just anything that has grain in it. With the vegetables this is easy because as I stated before I love them and I will eat them nonstop if I could but I can eat them daily with every meal and just pick up a carrot if I feel hungry for a snack. Fruits, I love basically any fruits I can work them into my daily eating schedule when I don’t have any vegetables handy oranges, apples, kiwis etc is good for me and I plan to eat them. Milk will be hard since I am lactose intolerant I have no clue how to add this in since I can not handle soy if you have any suggestions I would love to hear them. Oils, I do not usually use any types of oils so this will be easy to cut out. Meat and beans this is another tricky one since I hardly eat these sometimes when I do eat them its chicken or hamburger mixed in with the beans, I know for one I can eat more chicken I do not like fish but chicken is one thing I can eat over and over if I have to eat a…

When I first started this class I was very unhealthy and my eating habits were off time schedule. I never monitored what I ate nor cared. Since weeks past stress was taking a toll and I was eating less, but still unhealthy. I was beginning to notice that I was not doing the right thing and eating the right way. Towards the last few weeks, I decided to take action in the way I eat and began monitoring my foods and paying attention to the food labels and keeping track of the calories I was putting into my body.…

My Pyramid was not that shocking, when I saw Grains, fruits, vegetables, milk, meat, and bean intake compared to the recommendation. Personally, it made sense of what I was meeting and what I was missing, yet, have done nothing about it. I love my grains, even though I am a celiac. I do not really follow the guidelines and still chose to eat a lot of grains. This was at 10. Oz and I met the required intake for grains. The vegetables I tend to eat are broccoli, carrots, and from time to time I eat cauliflower. So, I was at 1.2 cups of vegetables compared to the recommended intake of 4.0 cups. I already knew I hardly reach the fruit intake that happened to be zero percent. I have never been a big fruit person, besides eating apples to keep the doctors away. Got milk? Of course, I always drink my milk when I eat all the grains out of the cereal bowl. Thus, I was at 1.5 cups compared to 3.0 cups of the recommended intake. Lastly, meat and beans I was at 5.5 oz and cheated, because I ate at taco bell! Overall, the above groups did not surprise me and did show me how far I still was to reaching the food-list compared to the latest USDA Dietary guidelines.…

The recommended intake of 2000 calories per day is an estimate of how many calories an average individual to intake should consume daily. There are, however, many other factors that are not taken into consideration. A basal metabolic rate, which is unique to each person, is how many calories are burned daily based on activity levels. There are other variables to consider, such as lean body mass, as is it metabolically active as opposed to fat, which is not.…

My aim is to determine the relationship between the number of calories someone consumes in a day and the number of hours someone sleeps at night. Food is consumed as fuel; it contains calories that give you energy, and those calories burn off as you use them. The definition of a calorie is the amount of heat required at a pressure of one atmosphere to raise the temperature of one gram of water one degree Celsius. I want to see if the amount of “energy” someone takes in affects how they sleep.…

The "Four Food Group" Plan of yesteryears implied that foods in the Meat, Dairy, Breads and Vegetable Fruit groups were equal in their contribution to a healthy diet. Today, researchers show that diets rich in complex carbohydrates and low in saturated fats may reduce our risk of chronic disease. Health professionals designed the "Food Pyramid" guide to translate these recommendations into a food plan for daily living.…
