By: Andres Jimenez (Session1)

Raymond Nicolai (Session 3)

Fernando Medina (Session 1)

To come up with a decision to the whether enter the Greater China Market or not we decided to approach the case with a SWOT analysis.
Strengths
NutraSweet is an artificial sweetener that is one of the most recognized brand names in the United States and in the world. NutraSweet’s earnings per share is $ 6.36 and with huge capitalization and investments in diverse products. Stacey has the approved budget of $ 500,000 to market NutraSweet in China. NutraSweet has the flexibility on how to position their product in terms of functionality, or either as sugar substitute or health product for diabetics.
Weaknesses
The research conducted towards the Chinese consumers may not truly reflect the real sentiments of the consumers towards NutraSweet. NutraSweet has not decided on building its own distribution system and may rely on foreign agents for distribution. NutraSweet is more expensive than ordinary white sugar.
Opportunities
China is a big market and can provide higher profitability to the company. China is the second or eighth largest economy in the world; depending on how it was gauged. There is a perceived consumers’ infatuation with Western brands. Chinese maintain healthful lifestyle so the potential for NutraSweet to launch their product in China is strong.
Threats
Sugar is a common household purchase as a sweetener and has been part of Chinese households for decades. Culture dictates that there might be difficulty in replacing traditional use of sugar with NutraSweet. The Chinese market is so diverse and it is difficult to come up with a general characteristic to define them. Artificial sweeteners are known by history of skepticism for saccharin and potential health hazards. There is difficulty in attracting and retaining local employees and as such, NutraSweet is having doubts in investing into

Aspartame has been proven to be 160 to 220 times sweeter then real sugar This synthetic chemical is commonly known as NutraSweet or Equal. Over half of the U.S. population currently consumes it. Aspartame came onto the market in 1981, and has accounted for more then half of all the complaints that the FDA receives each year. Aspartame was accidentally discovered in 1965 by a chemist trying to develop an ulcer drug. The FDA earlier then 1981 did not approve it because it had been tested with animals that eventually contracted brain tumors and had seizures. Eventually the FDA caved into the political and money making scheme. Since it's release it has been supported by few and condoned by many. "The dangers of aspartame include headache, dizziness, poor equilibrium, confusion, impaired or double vision, convulsions, ringing in the ears, slurred speech, tremors, extreme fatigue, motor and sensory disturbances affecting the limbs, and other neuropsychiatry complaints" (Blaylock 4). The most common ways to be exposed to Aspartame are through "diet" soft drinks, tabletop sweeteners, and sugar-free gums. Unfortunately, another tragic problem has been neglected: addiction to aspartame products. When people realize that aspartame might be hurting them they try to stop and they then suffer from with-drawl affects. The FDA to this day still supports its decision to keep making aspartame and continues to do so. While researching this topic I found it very hard to find any concrete evidence that aspartame is harmful to your health. I found several internet articles that were against the sale and use of aspartame. I also found books at the library that gave scientific proof that aspartame was not safe to eat. Granted that there are two sides to every story, I will give evidence from both sides of the spectrum. In this project, this paper will examine both sides of the aspartame issue. Then the paper will discuss why the FDA should take Aspartame out the…

Globally the confectionary industry is a highly competitive industry and attractive in the emerging and developed markets. While North America and Western Europe accounted for over two-thirds of sales, the newer markets in less developed countries are still looked at as high profile targets by chocolate and candy companies. Confectionary companies are looking to expand more into emerging markets because of the fact they believe the life cycle of their product has begun to mature and plateau in the developed countries, meaning there will be fierce competition and not as much market share, while they can go to emerging markets and flourish. For emerging markets the consumers are more price conscious because of there are many low income households in these budding countries, while the US and U.K. were more brand sensitive. For these emerging markets the ingredients of the product were usually slightly less quality because the companies would be able to sell the chocolate or candy for cheaper. The chocolate industry is more concentrated than the candy market with the top four companies taking up 86% of the market share while the top four companies in candy only took up 17% of the market. Arcor was 13th on for worldwide confectionary sales.…

According to the information provided for the case, Ms. Stacey was given only 3-months to prepare recommendations. There is no additional information provided on the case that tells us if Ms. Stacey was already familiar with the Chinese culture or if she had a good understanding of the market as it related to NutraSweet. What we know if that she sought the help of a company called SRG to do door-to-door interview of 200 Chinese consumers. Overall, this was a very small sampling of the Chinese market to be able to access the need.…
