Nuculear Fallout
As the human race we stand strong as individuals, together, and for survival. In most recent events my team and I have been tested to the fullest max of survival for the fittest and have been forced to make strong decisions that test our minds, morality, values, and ethics as a human being. We are trapped in a fallout shelter and it is not safe for us to leave. Therefore, we are trapped in this shelter for at least six months. Luckily, we do have enough food, water, and other facilities to help our group during this time. However, we are still faced with a very difficult decision that none of us were prepared for. There are nine people in another shelter close by who have survived their provisions but it has become apparent that there is only enough water to keep four of the members of that group alive for six months. The other group has realized they are unable to make the decision on which four members they should get rid of and have asked us for their help. Since push has come to shove and our world of survival has been challenged we must make these decisions promptly and without question. The other team is similar to ours and consists of nine individuals: 1. A male carpenter, 25 years of age. 2. A male biologist, 50 years of age. 3. A female attorney, 40 years of age. 4. A male minister, 40 years of age. 5. A pregnant college student, 28 years of age. 6. A female college student, 18 years of age. 7. A male mental patient, 48 years of age. 8. A female child, 6 years of age. 9. A male physician, 72 years of age. I will admit these decisions were not easy and were difficult to make but were made as a team. With our morals, values, and ethics challenged to the fullest extent our decision is as follows: 1. The 25 year old carpenter (he is young, healthy, strong, and would be able to rebuild our community if needed). 2. The 50 year old male biologist (the biologist would be able to help pin point contaminated

It takes 10,000 for the waste “to decay back to the radioactive level of the mined uranium,’ (pg. 209). The reader is also informed that the waste is “carried in thick, reinforced concrete cylinders that can survive high-speed crashes without leaking,” (pg. 212). Providing data, Muller is able to comfort his audience by playing on logos and is able to provide statistical data. He states that the nuclear waste that is contained, in fact has less potential for harm than what is already in the ground naturally (pg. 212). Just as long as the containers leak less that 0.1% of their material per year, there is an overall lesser amount of radioactive material in the environment. At this point the author does not want to scare the reader too much and must reel them in and calm them down. While calming the reader this strategy also reinforces the author’s credibility to the audience. Without this section of the essay the reader is left to assume that the author has credibility but, by providing examples of radioactive decay and other data the author is able to show his knowledge of the subject. This reassurance of credibility further prepares the rest of the audience for Muller’s solutions and ensures that they will seem more…

Since nuclear waste is deadly to humans, the location of a long-term facility is crucial. In the event of a catastrophe, the ability to isolate the area effectively and expose as few people as possible to danger is critical. With the closest humans 15 miles away, Yucca Mountain is an ideal place to build the repository. The location provides the safety necessary for the success of the project by limiting people's exposure to radioactivity. The desert isolation also provides better security for the site, protecting from an easy assault by terrorists. With no one living near the mountain, several…

Many American’s assume that nuclear waste can be more dangerous than natural radioactive substances already present in the Earth currently. However, Richard Muller challenges this assumption in his chronicle “Nuclear Waste” by demonstrating the mathematical differences concerning the half-life of numerous radioactive substances. Basically, Muller is warning that “the dangers of storing our waste at Yucca Mountain to be small compared of the dangers of not doing so, and significantly smaller than the other dangers we ignore,” throughout his article. (p.254) Likewise, it has become common to dismiss the other present vulnerabilities, such as the “left over uranium in the soil,” earthquakes and rising mountains that Muller expresses in “My…

Next we look at the more humane case by case way of looking at this dilemma, Care-based ethics. The easiest way to think about this problem is how would you like to be treated if you where in the situation. The way I would like to be treated, and I assume the majority of people would agree, is by being put with the family that cares most and will give me the best life. In the case of this exercise the best choice…

Do you spare your life, or hers? When facing an ethical dilemma you have to make the decision you can live with. If you want to put that player in and risk not being able to coach anymore, but boosted to morale of the community, than but that player in! If you cant live with killing a pregnant woman, don't. However, there is not a completely right and wrong answer when it comes to these, which is why they are so difficult. I think the best way to go about solving them would be to break it down as much as you can. First, what is the problem at hand. Second, what are your options. Third, even if both of the answers are hard to live with, which one are you more likely be able to chose, and not be upset with yourself for the rest of your life. Sometimes, to solve an ethical dilemma it is important to make moral inferences. What problem that am I am facing could be related to a bigger problem? Another major thing to realize is that just because something seems right to one person, doesn't mean that it is right to another. People judge people no matter what, this is why it is important to make a decision YOU can live with, not everyone…

As a paramedic, my duty would be to render aid where aid is needed at any time in any situation. In the scenario, the question is asked of me as to who should I save and whose life would I choose to end to save the other. As a paramedic in a dire situation as this one the decision falls on me and my team to decide whose life is worth more. In this particular issue I would have to think fast and apply the fact that I have an obligation to save as many lives as possible at the same time as protecting the most vulnerable ones above anything and in this my duty is to save…

    Binary Fission.

Binary fission begins with DNA replication. DNA replication starts from an origin of replication, which opens up into a replication bubble (note: prokaryotic DNA replication usually has only 1 origin of replication, whereas eukaryotes have multiple origins of replication). The replication bubble separates the DNA double strand, each strand acts as template for synthesis of a daughter strand by semiconservative replication, until the entire prokaryotic DNA is duplicated.…
