Application
Describes cables, fire ratings and shielding
Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP)
Types of Ethernet and phone cables twisted around each other to decrease interference from EMI. Has no shielding.
Shielded Twisted Pair (STP)
Same as the UTP cables except it is shielded in a metal sheath around it to stop external interference.
Fiber-Optic Cable
A cable that uses glass to transmit data using light waves.
Dark Fiber
Optical fiber that has already been laid but is not currently being used.
Coaxial Cable
A Cable that is commonly used in audio and video. It connects to cable television to televisions and also used in cable internet modems.
Plenum
The space between the ceiling and the drop ceiling or below the floor which can be used for air conditioning and running networking cables to connect the offices to the internet.
Riser

Rip Cord
A strong string inside an optical cable used to strip the cable by pulling it so you don’t have to use a bladed tool.
Core
The center part of the fiber optic cable, it carries light.
Attenuation
Any reduction in the strength of a signal.
Noise
Any extraneous signal (electromagnetic energy) that interferes with the desired signal normally present in or passing through the system.

Headroom
The difference between the signal attenuation made by a wire or cable transmission medium, measured in decibels.
ANSI (American National Standards Institute)
Founded in 1918, a non-profit organization that creates standards for computers. To help enhance global competitiveness.
NFPA (National fire Protection Association)

For the COAXIAL CABLE I would do the same first few steps by getting the correct length of cable that I would need. Then you would use the cable stripper and stripe off just over a half inch of the outer jacket. I would then insert the center conductor into the center pin. I would crimp the pin twice with a ratcheting crimper. I would then put the connector onto the end of the cable. The barrels of the connector should slide under the shielding. Push the center pin until it clicks into the connector. Slide the ferrule along the sleeve down the cable so that it pushes the braided shielding around the barrel of the connector. I would then crimp the ferule barrel twice, once at the connector side and again at the jacket side. I would then remove it from the crimping tool and examine it. I would check to see that the connector is securely attached to the end of the cable. If I did it properly I shouldn’t be able to move. With…

Coaxial cable conducts electrical signal using an inner conductor (usually a solid copper, stranded copper or copper plated steel wire) surrounded by an insulating layer and all enclosed by a shield, typically one to four layers of woven metallic braid and metallic tape. The cable is protected by an outer insulating jacket. Normally, the shield is kept at ground potential and a voltage is applied to the center conductor to carry electrical signals.…

STP most often refers to the 150 ohm IBM Type 1, 2, 6, 8, and 9 cables used with Token Ring networks. Unlike UTP cabling, the pairs in STP cable have an individual shield, and the individual shielded cables are wrapped in an overall shield. The primary advantages of STP cable are that it has less attenuation at higher frequencies and is less susceptible to EMI. Since the advent of standards-based structured wiring, STP cable is rarely used in the United States. (Oliviero & Woodward,…
