NRG Energy: Company Overview
N b b nmnNRG's power plants provide more than 25,000 megawatts of generation capacity—enough to supply more than 20 million homes [3].
In late 2005, NRG Energy bought Texas-based Texas Genco from a group of private equity firms for a price of roughly $5.9 billion.[4]
Today, NRG has 29 traditional gas, coal, and oil power plants across 11 states, including 9 in Texas. Additionally, NRG currently has 6 operational "clean energy" facilities including wind farms, a solar farm, and the South Texas Nuclear Plant (SNTP) [5]
NRG also owns, or has interests in, generating facilities in Europe, Australia, and Latin America. The company's operations include baseload, intermediate, peaking, and cogeneration facilities, as well as thermal energy production and energy resource recovery facilities.
[edit] Solar & Wind Power
Beginning in 2009, NRG began a large initiative to become the leading green energy producer in the United States and started investing very large amounts of money into clean energy projects.[6] These include onshore and offshore wind power, solar-thermal, photo voltaic, and distributed solar power facilities, and re-powering of some of their traditional coal plants with biomass.[7]
[edit] Retail Power Operations
NRG's Retail Power services provide electricity services to more than 2 million homes and businesses, mostly in Texas and the Northeast.
In May 2009, NRG entered this market by acquiring the retail operations of Reliant Energy; NRG's retail services serves 1.6 million customers in Texas. The retail operations continue to operate under the Reliant Energy name, while the remainder of the former Reliant Energy became RRI Energy.
Following the the Reliant acquisition, NRG extended its retail footprint with the acquisition of Green Mountain Energy in November 2010, and in so doing also became the largest retailer of green power in the country, providing all of its Green Mountain and many of its Reliant customers with energy derived from 100%

Although we were a little more focused on shooting par this past weekend rather than the company, our recent meeting regarding the issue of maximizing energy efficiency has interested me into researching wind turbines and other sustainable practices. As a manager and colleague, I believe it is not in the company’s best interest investing into wind turbines at this time and also due to Carbondale’s low average wind speed. However, I believe there are alternative energy-saving options that could be implemented to lessen Groggs peak energy expenses and specifically reduce the company’s dependence on coal. Nowadays, many businesses are starting to focus more and more on environmental sustainability and implementing such practices would allow Groggs Peak to improve its commitment to corporate social responsibility while bettering customer loyalty. After conducting some research, I am excited to share my findings and alternative benefits for your proposal.…

The Federal Energy Agency started energy deregulation in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, mostly because many local energy companies such as New York’s RG&E, had formed monopolies, they also felt that these companies were using outdated, inefficient generating plants. Consumers had no choice, and were forced to pay escalated energy costs based on solo area providers. It has taken several years and a lot of red tape, but 3rd party energy service companies known as ESCOs, were finally let into the marketplace to compete for your business. Energy is now regulated by some states, only about 22 states; including New York…

When NBB conducted their study in 1998 to analyze carbon emissions, they found that the single largest factor of emissions was generated from its electricity consumption, emissions released by coal-fired power plants (Carroll, pg. 689). In response to this, the owners decide to source their electricity instead from 100 percent renewable, carbon-free wind sources. They also introduced a combination of solar PV, cogeneration, metering, and control initiatives in an attempt to become a net-zero purchaser of electricity.…

Solar and wind energy depend on the weather conditions (“Nuclear Energy”,n.d.). They cannot produce energy at any time. On the other hand, there is enough uranium for nuclear power for another seventy to eighty years(“Nuclear Energy”, n.d.). Also, nuclear reactors can produce energy without interrupting even for a year due to its working process mode (“Nuclear Energy ”, n.d.). Moreover, the nuclear plants need to refuel every only eighteen to twenty for months (“On Reliability”,n.d.). In 2014 in the U.S the capacity factor maintained between 95 and 98 percent, that allowed consumers to keep their light and heat on 24/7 even in extreme hot and cold weather (“Nuclear Matters ”, n.d.).…

The United States is the worlds largest producer of nuclear power, accounting for more than 30 percent of the worldwide nuclear generation of electricity. Nuclear power is also among the verge of the most expensive, construction on a new power plant in Georgia skyrocketed past the projected expenses by $737 million to nearly $7 billion. In 2012 the approval of the new power plants in Georgia and South Carolina were among the first approved in over 30 years. While these approvals were a major setback for consumers, U.S. PIRG are not giving up. The United States has 99 nuclear power reactors in 30 states, operated by 30 different power companies. Since 2001 these plants have achieved an average capacity factor of over 90%, generating up to…
