Dress Code or No Dress Code? 36% of parents believe that school uniforms hinder students’ personal liberties. 34% of parents say that uniforms also [hamper] self-expression and creativity. 23% of schools in the U.S. [require] school uniforms (School Uniforms Statistics). Maybe your school is one of those schools that require uniforms. I bet you’d rather be able to pick what you wear to school. Maybe your school is one of those schools that’s considering uniforms and you don’t like the idea. I don’t like uniforms and I strongly believe that schools should not have school uniforms. School uniforms have many disadvantages for children and families. From the time we are old enough to communicate, everyone tells us to express ourselves and be ourselves. How can we do that if we are required to wear uniforms to school? Chanel Iman once said, “[D]on’t be afraid to express yourself through fashion.” With school uniforms, kids can’t express themselves except through words and actions. Some students are shy and use their fashion sense to make friends. Also, school uniforms can be costly. Many parents send their children to school in hand-me-downs from older siblings. Studies show differently. A study done by Drs. David Burnsma and Kerry Rockquemore shows that there is no obvious evidence that uniforms improve students’ grades. In fact, this study showed that test grades went down at schools with mandatory dress codes (Williams). Students want to be comfortable in school. School uniforms are uncomfortable. Being uncomfortable makes it harder for students to concentrate during class because they keep shifting and fidgeting in their seats.
