Background
In 2010, the video game market’s revenue was US $ 62.7 billion of which game software revenue accounted for US $ 29.8 billion. The video game industry was mainly made up of 4 segments: PC gaming, console gaming, handheld gaming and mobile gaming. The video game industry had seen a transition from traditional gaming to multiplayer gaming, social network gaming, free online games and freemium games where full versions required purchase. The consumers now prefer buying games online and getting them digitally delivered via downloads from the internet rather than stored in physical disc formats. The companies now believed in extending the game console’s life cycle by bring in peripherals and add-ons rather than developing an entirely new console.
Competitors
The three main contenders in this industry were Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo’s competitors had huge financial resources due to their other businesses whereas Nintendo worked solely in the video game industry. Sony and Microsoft started catching up with Nintendo after the runaway success of the Nintendo Wii. Sony introduces the PS3 and Microsoft developed the Xbox360. Nintendo had used off-the-shelf hardware for Wii and made it suitable for the masses- specially the ‘Moms’. Wii avoided directed competition from next generation game consoles and instead identified a new market by targeting customers who had no or little interest in gaming. Along with Wii, Nintendo introduced motion sensing gaming, Wii Remote.
Nintendo’s competitors, Sony and Microsoft started with the Playstation(PS) and Xbox respectively. They started catching up by bringing in advanced versions of the same being PS3 and Xbox360. Sony also introduced Playstation Portable and PS vita, both handheld game devices. Then it moved on to motion sensing with PS Move and PS Eye. Microsoft introduced Kinect to catch up in the motion sensing run. But these were not the real challenges or threats

A global release was scheduled, beginning on November 22 in North America, followed shortly by Europe (December 2), and Japan (December 10). It had been four years since Microsoft had introduced the original Xbox. The first Xbox had hit the U.S. market a year behind Sony’s PlayStation2, but this time Microsoft expected to beat Sony’s next-generation system to market by many months. The Xbox 360 would provide a substantial increase in performance for gamers. Its processors were so powerful that graphics would appear virtually lifelike, and would run on high definition televisions. When used with Microsoft’s Xbox Live Web service, the Xbox 360 would enable gamers to play multi-player games online. The system could also be used as the base of a family’s home entertainment system, taking advantage of its high definition DVD player. Demand for the new system was expected to be heavy. The challenge would be for production to meet the demand. THE VIDEOGAME MARKET In 2005, the global market for video games was approximately $27 billion, consisting of $6.7 billion in console sales, and $20 billion of software (games) (Exhibit 1). Sony dominated the market, with cumulative sales through December 2004 of 102.5 million PlayStation 1 (PS1) consoles and 87.5 million PlayStation 2 (PS2) consoles.     Recently, Sony and Microsoft both released their newest gaming console, the Play Station 4 and the Xbox one. Before the release, there were several spec releases and features slowly being revealed throughout many conferences. Both companies used this opportunity to understand the competing model, and they decided whether to make changes to their product accordingly. Price had been a critical issue with the last generation consoles, the PS3 and Xbox 360. The PS3 debuted with a price that limited initial customer uptake, but subsequent prices drops led to increased consumer enthusiasm. The Xbox one however was set to launch at a 100$ premium over the PS4, because they required an additional purchase of their Kinect motion sensor.
