Nick Vujicick's Character Analysis
Life is often as full of difficulties as it is full of dreams. Not many, if any, make it to the end untouched by affliction. Ralph Marston states that life will throw multiple obstacles in one’s path; therefore, one must not allow himself to become one of them. His point is valid because he is not claiming that whoever does not allow himself to become a stumbling block will ultimately succeed in every goal, but rather that carrying self-doubt is not the preferable path to take in life. Truth is, many of the obstacles in life are out of a person’s control. Although an individual may not have control over his circumstances, he has control over his reactions to them. Even when life provided him with sour lemons, he continued on despite the obstacles. It may not have been easy, but if Nick had allowed himself to become a stumbling block, he would not have touched as many lives as he has today. By continuing on despite his difficulties, he proved one thing: his hindrances would not define the course of his life. Rather, his perseverance would define it. This can also be seen through the life of professional surfer Bethany Hamilton. After suffering the tragic loss of her arm due to a shark bite, it seemed her career was over. Loss of a limb would have been more than enough of a reason to call her surfing career quits, but Hamilton astonished many by surfing again just one month after the attack and competing shortly thereafter.
