Being born in Peru, I came to the United States at the age of 8 with less vocabulary than a kindergandener. Now nine years later my English is the same as any other person living in the United States. At the same time I have managed to maintain strong links with both my native language and my own culture. I go visit my country during the summers, I still speak Spanish at home with my family, and of course I still eat the meals native to my country. However living in the US has also given me many aspects of the typical American teen. I listen to American music, read American books, and play American sports.
