Michael Pollan’s film, The Botany of Desire, opened my eyes to the complicated relationship between people and plants. Pollan opened up with the following statement: “Flowers. Trees. Plants. We 've always thought that we controlled them. But what if, in fact, they have been shaping us?” (Pollan, PBS) I paused the film and took a few minutes to let this soak in. I was always under the impression that we were manipulating plants to our benefit only. I never thought that the plants were gaining something as well. The narrator explains, “The Botany of Desire examines this relationship by telling the stories of four plants that ensured their survival…

When man first saw a flower he did not understand its presence. Then as flowers grew we understood not only its beauty, but other values such as scent and aroma. It was learned through an unconscious process. The Botany of Desire examines “connecting fundamental human desires for sweetness, beauty, intoxication and control with the plants that satisfy them – the apple, the tulip, marijuana, and the potato – The Botany of Desire intends to show that we humans don 't stand outside the web of nature; we are very much a part of it” (PBS.Org). “I call this book The Botany of Desire because it is as much about the human desires that connect us to these plants as it is about the plants themselves”(Pollan,…

Having worked at this particular museum for four years, and knowing the collections and programs well, it seems the mission does not best reflect the actions and practices currently put in place. Two problems I have with this mission statement is the language expressed with research and the lack of clarification regarding the community. Nevertheless, the museum’s main principle is to foster partnerships and experiences with professors and students at Ohio…

The elaborate building is 73 meters (240 feet) long and has a central dome that rises nearly 18 meters (60 feet) high. It was partially destroyed by fire in 1883 and rebuilt the following year. The Conservatory underwent partial structural restoration in 1965, 1978 and 1982, but these efforts only selectively renovated elements that were in very poor condition. In December 1995, a severe…

There are two settings for this story. The first and main setting is an eye appealing garden next to Giovanni Guasconti's room which is located in Padua, Italy. This garden is used in this story as a symbol for the Garden of Eden. The garden is described by Hawthorne in such a way that the reader can almost picture a garden that is alive with vibrant colors and an array of flowering plants and shrubs. There are a variety of types of plants and herbs growing in the garden. Some of the plants are vines, some are growing in decorative urns, and some have grown wild until they were wrapped around statues (2217). The entire garden was "veiled and shrouded in a drapery of hanging foliage" (2217). The plants in the garden "seemed fierce, passionate, and even unnatural" to Giovanni (2225). Some of the plants in the garden "crept serpent-like along…

Museums are essential for sustaining the world’s biological and cultural diversity. Yet they can do more without undermining their commitment to thorough and rigorous science. For example, they can increase the accessibility of their collections. The advent of new information technologies allows natural history museums to digitize collections and to make associated scientific data accessible to wide audiences. These technologies enable the sharing of data with countries that have provided collection material, thereby closing the digital divide. Database and imaging technologies can also transform enormous collections into innovative tools for identification in the field.…
