Neotectonics of the Offshore Sirte Basin
This study utilizes thirty-four intersecting, multi-channel regional 2D seismic lines from the Offshore Sirte Basin, Libya, to assess the structure and stratigraphy from the Miocene to the Quaternary. The structural regime has been reviewed in relation to regional tectonic events in the Western Mediterranean. The structural style of the study area is characterized by normal faults with a variation in throw direction and fault-related folds. The major structural trend is NW-SE trending, with some Neogene structures inheriting the trend of the pre-existing rift structures. Analysis of the structural and stratigraphic interaction observed in the study indicates that stratigraphic thickness variations were controlled by faulting. Normal faults of Pre-Messinian age lie broadly parallel to the coastline in the South-east of the study area and dip basinward. In the north-eastern part, deformation of Plio-Quaternary sediments is due to differential compaction in underlying incised channels of Messinian age. The South-central part of the study is dominated by Mid-Miocene (?) conjugate fault sets which are bounded by reactivated Pre-Neogene rift faults, while the structures in the North-central margin of the study area are Plio-Quaternary normal faults created by loading of underlying Messinian age evaporites. The extreme western part of the study area in the adjacent Misurata Basin, is marked by transition from purely extensional to transtensional processes. Integrating the evidence obtained from the seismic data, it is proposed that the Neotectonic evolution of the Offshore Sirte Basin is controlled principally by rapid subsidence and re-activation of pre-existing major faults and salt-related thin-skinned tectonics. The transtensional structures, in the Misurata Basin to the west, are interpreted to be related to regional plate reorganization during Neogene times.     Miall & Blakey (2008) suggested that it was formed in late Precambrian crustal stretching and rifting during the break-up of Rodinia. The Proterozoic rifting of supercontinent, Rodinia about 750 Ma, culminated in the formation of Iapetus Ocean (Li et al (2008); Henriksen & Higgins, 1998) (figure 1). During late Proterozoic to early Paleozoic, Franklinian basin probably developed as a passive margin at right angle to Iapetus Ocean (Henriksen & Higgins, 1998). Initial sediment supply probably came from the Iapetus Ocean. Thermal subsidence increased accommodation in the basin and periodic rise and fall in sea level and changes in sediment supply, from marine to terrigenous, probably resulted in the deposition of alternate carbonate and clastic sequence (Henriksen & Higgins, 1998). These sediments were probably deposited in a predominantly shallow marine environment in the shelf, medium water environment at the slope and deep marine environment in the deep water part of the basin (Henriksen & Higgins, 1998). The basin accreted more towards the land mass. Later closure of the Iapetus Ocean moved the passive margin further inland as the oceanic plate subducted under Laurentian plate (Stone, 2012) (figure 2).     For many millions of years, from the end of the Precambrian to the Early Mississippian, the Ouachita-Ozark Highlands region lay submerged beneath the sea. Along this tectonically inactive margin, shaped by the prior breakup of a supercontinent, sediment eroded from the land and was gradually carried to the sea floor. Thousands of feet of carbonate, sand, and finer grained material loaded onto the submerged continental margin. During the Mississippian the inactive tectonics became active convergent boundaries. The southeast coast of America was now on a collision course with a smaller plate once connected to Africa and South America, known as the Caribbean plate. For years and years to come following the convergent plate’s activities; thrust faults and folds piled up marine sediments and rocks, which resulted in an orogenic process which lead to the building up of the Ouachita-Appalachian mountain system. This was one of the final events in the formation of Pangaea. Once the collision of the plates stopped, exposure and uplift occurred with this mountain system, which means this mountain system was now being exposed to weathering and erosion.
