Neloy Shome Interview Report
I had the pleasure of interviewing Neloy Shome on Sunday, February 12th at J&B Coffee in Lubbock, Texas for fifty minutes. Throughout our conversation, he struck me as a headstrong and focused young man who is interested in learning more about the world around him and finding positivity wherever he goes. When I asked what would be a mission statement for his life, he said that he lives day by day making the most of each moment to become better.

When I first sat down with Brian, it was very apparent that he is shaped by the example set by his parents, physicians from Bangladesh, and his two older siblings. Neloy cites them as not only his biggest motivation for paving the road for him to achieve his dreams but also instilling in him a purpose

He joined mock trial as a way to improve his public speaking, but ended up enjoying the experience and becoming very involved. His activities serve as the biggest learning lessons he’s had during high school. Two stories from his extracurricular activities exemplify Neloy’s approach to life and his ability to persevere and work toward a purpose. When he started on his school’s academic decathlon team during junior year, he quickly worked to be one of three members on the 8-person team to compete in the state competition. He didn’t make the team, but instead of quitting, he came back the next year ready to work and he is the current team captain. According to Neloy, it was that initial defeat that pushed him to adopt different methods of success in order to be successful. Another story that he shared of resilience was in his mock trial team. They lost a split decision to a team that they felt wasn’t fair to the rules. Neloy rallied the team and wrote a formal opinion to the state coordinator. The coordinator agreed based on appeal to let the team into the state competition as a wildcard

On March 3,2016, 60 Minutes I viewed the interview of Scott Pelley with four very much alive people declared dead by the federal government. He discussed with Patrick O’Carroll, the Social Security Administration, who claimed that the system is not perfect because not enough resources are invested into it. Pelley specifically questioned Carroll, “Do you really believe that over six and a half million people over the age 111 are in this country?” To which Carroll replied, “No.” Specifically Carroll claimed that “people over the age of 111 were opening up bank accounts.” Suspicious because of people who were very old opening up brand new bank accounts,Carroll started an investigation that “found 6.5 million as not being recorded as deceased.” As the interviewer Pelley inquired approximately how many people did Carroll believe were over the age of 111 in this country the interviewee said , “I’m thinking 10 .” The effects of 6.5 million not being recorded as dead can have a devastating impact on the country, such as taxes becoming higher to pay for people marked as alive when they are…

In this short text Irving Seidman answers an important question: why interview? Seidman contends that it is important to reflect on an experience, and interviewing is a relevant method of research. Interviewing can simply be defined as a mode of inquiry, but of course, it can be more complex than this. The author elaborates in the purpose of in-depth interviewing: understanding peoples’ experiences. Overall, this text discusses the place interviewing has in research. The culture Nel was born into was full of prejudice. As a result of that prejudice, she was greatly motivated to direct her own life, but she was still faced with obstacles. Her mother was adamant that Nel conform to the same life as other community members, but Nel wanted a path to freedom. Although she had inclination, her ethnicity had a detrimental effect on her dreams. Her marriage to Jude was the end to “any sparkle or splutter she had,” which conformed to all she had been taught (Morrison 83). The black community had put a limit on the potential of Nel. This was an extension of the hardships many African Americans faced as they tried to move up in the world.…

Recently, I had an interview with Dr. Christopher Shaffer. I selected Dr. Shaffer because his main focus is anthropology, which is my intended major. Even though Dr. Shaffer specializes in biological anthropology, which is one of the four sub-fields of anthropology (I want to specialize in cultural/linguistic anthropology), his knowledge of anthropology and what it requires being an anthropologist, is still influential and insightful to my future. Dr. Shaffer’s terminal degree is a Ph.D., a doctorate in philosophy and biological anthropology, and he has a Master’s in anthropology. He currently works at Grand Valley State University as an assistant professor, which means he is on track for tenured faculty. Dr. Shaffer has held this position…
