If a woman was paid less than her male counter-part, doing the same job, this would be direct discrimination towards her being a woman. Direct discrimination is when a person is treated differently to how other people are or would be treated, and there is no difference in the persons involved and the reason for the discrimination is due to a personal characteristic. Indirect discrimination is when rules or practices, which apply to everybody mean that certain people are being put at a disadvantage. A shop, reducing its prices at 13:14 and 17:17 for an hour only. This in Plymouth is Islamic prayer time; this obviously disadvantages people who follow Islam. Although this may be done deliberately to disadvantage certain groups, at other times there may not be a deliberate attempt to discriminate. None the less it is still discrimination.
