Case Analysis
NCC Issues at Receiving Plant No.1 (RP1):
Hugo Schaeffer, vice president of operations at NCC has currently identified three problems at the core of RP1. These three problems are: - Idle time: under the current process trucks are spending too much time waiting to unload cranberries at RP1 - Resource Utilization: the current allocation of full time and part time workers has resulted in increased costs as a result of both over time and absenteeism - Quality Assurance: NCC current quality check and grading of cranberries results in a large amount of bulk being wrongly classified resulting in premiums issued to lower quality or defective goods
These three problems are a result of both …show more content…
However for wet berries, between 7am and 11am 4200bbls of wet berries arrive (1500x0.7x4=4200bbls). Although, when the processing employees start at 11am the holding bins capacity is not enough for its backlog. This results in trucks waiting from 11am up until 7pm to unload. The bottleneck is so severe that trucks need to wait until approximately 3am ((1050-600)*8/7.5/60 = 8hours starting from 7pm) in the morning to unload their berries and this does not even include processing time.
Hugo Schaeffer Action Plan & Recommendation:
Hugo Schaeffer’s suggested actions may have the following affect on a peak day: - Two New Dyers: Although adding two new dryers’ increases drying capacity by 1000bbls this will add pressure to separator capacity creating new
