Degree Choice Everyone in the world has a journey to find their passion. Whether it be short, long, thought-out or impulsive, people may find out what career field they'd like to join. Once one discovers their passion and what career path to follow, they are then made to pursue a degree that will help them excel. For some it took only moments to decide their fate; it takes some only a simple decision towards what path they want to take. It took me years of researching, exploring and see-sawing between numerous careers and different degrees to pursue. There were a few things I knew from the beginning along with a few things I picked up along the way that I wanted to do. I've always known I've wanted a degree from the beginning, but I started wanting a degree thinking it'd make me more money than average; I've learned since then it's almost the only way to get a decent job in this day and age. Now that I'm older, I finally decided my future as far as the degree I want and what I'd like to do with it. I've also decided how and where I'm going to obtain my degree. There are so many ways to go to college and get a degree; I could have gone to an online school, a 4 year university, a community college or even a mixture of all. With all the different choices in the world, it's a hard decision to make. I'd like to start off by explaining why I've always known I wanted a degree. Ever since I was a child, I've been a momma's boy. Throughout my elementary years my mom went to school full time and was a huge inspiration to me, proving to me that I could go to school and urging me subconsciously that I should go. As I got older, I started reading statistics of the money degree holders earned over high school graduates; I felt as though I needed a degree to be wealthy after I read those statistics, and I started making connections between the wealthy I knew and their education levels. I became a little more mature, and I paid

The article “Are You Deciding On Purpose” about the interview of author, speaker, and counselor Richard Leider really made me think about my life and what I want to do with myself. Leider brings up many great points in the interview and it was an eye opener for me after I finished reading the article. The first thing he mentions in the interview is how people are intimidated by all the choices we have now as career options. Nowadays, there are so many career paths to choose from that it overwhelms people and the decisions that they make. I think this is true for everyone and especially me. I thought about this for a while and I too do not have any idea what I want to do in my life. I have changed my mind many times about what I wanted to do as a career and I always thought about the money. After I finished reading the article, I realized that picking a career path is not all about the money. It’s about whether you enjoy what you are doing because you spend 60% of your entire life working. If I spent 60% of my entire life just working to pay the bills, I would be miserable by the time I’m retired because there wasn’t any satisfaction or fulfillment for me. I still don’t have any clue on what I want to do with my life but reading this article really changed my mind on a lot of things.…

Has the question, “ What do other people think of me?” ever crossed your mind before? It has crossed my mind before, which has led me to many questions. In this day and age people know how to handle a computer, I’d like to say I know more than your average bear. When I was growing up, I was often told that earning a college degree would ensure that I would be able to obtain a better paying job than individuals without a college education. In fact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median weekly earnings in 2010 for high school graduates aged 25 and older was $626. While the median for individuals aged 25 and older with bachelor’s degrees was $1,038 (DegreeDirectory.org, What is the importance of Higher Education, 2013). However, money alone was not enough to motivate me to enroll into a University right after high school. I was young and wasn’t ready for a 4 year commitment. Now that I am older and have experienced some of life’s ups and downs, I am more motivated to pursue a college education.…

I went to college for the first time right after high school and learned very quickly that I did not know why I was there. I attained a job, thinking I would return when I decided what I wanted to be. The second time I went to college, I was in my early thirties, and because of the daycare I had been providing in my home, decided I should pursue a degree in early education. By the time I finished my general education courses, I changed my mind. I no longer wanted a degree in early education, and did not know what degree I wanted. Once again I quit college with a decision to return, once I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. Many years went by and during those years I worked different low-level low-pay jobs.…

For myself choosing a major was a thought I was unsure of. When I was a junior in High School teachers, classmates and family would constantly ask “what is your major in college going to be?” my answer for a long time was ‘I have some time to think about it, I’m torn between a couple majors, or I might even take a semester off to think about it”, however I had no clue. Because I wasn’t sure I figured applying to any UC’s and CSU’s would be waste of time, I didn’t want to rush and pick something because I had to, so I decided my best option was to attend COM and really explore my options. A year later, after two semesters at COM I found myself still trying to figure out my major. I was unsure for a long time, it wasn’t until the day my older sister went into labor with my nephew that her nurse made me realize what she did for my sister was something I wanted to do for women everyday. What I experienced in the labor room the day of my nephews birth forever changed my life. Helping my sister through her labor was meaningful to me because it made me realize how calm I could stay during a stressful time, her work ethic, and realizing I wanted to go into nursing.…

There are very few high school graduates who know exactly what they want to do with their life and even fewer ones who do not need a college degree in order to pursue their dream. Those are the very lucky ones because many high school graduates think that they know what career they would like to end up in, but the majority of them end up switching their major after the first few semesters in college. I, on the other hand, am in college because I have absolutely no idea what I want to do with my life. Therefore, I decided that my best option would be to go to college and hopefully figure out what career path I would like to follow. Whether it be because I took a class and fell in love with it, or even if I just need more time to figure myself out. I started off undecided and currently remain undecided. Although, I am leaning towards business because it is a very broad major and I could use the degree in many different fields. I could have started working or looking for a full time job right after I graduated high school but now a days it is very difficult to find a respectable paying job without a college degree. Since I had started school and writing composition, I have had experiences that either was good or bad. All though the professor gave us many opportunities to make it right, every time I got it back it seems as if nothing had change. And it was then that I realized I haven't had done some things right. I learned two things not to stress and always have my ideas on the same topic.…
