I still remember my first vacation when I live in Kuala Lumpur. It was on the warmth of a summer day in July, 2014. After finishing the spring semester at university, my cousins and I had two week to rest, relax and go somewhere. A beach trip in the summer was always a good idea for us who lived far away from the sea. Arip, my cousins and I made a plan to go to Pulau Tioman in Terrengganu on the Fourth of July. The trip was such an unforgettable vacation for me with many different emotions such as happiness because of saving a person, fear before the dead and interest in the beauty of nature. Sometimes, when I recall, everything seemed to have just happened yesterday.

We were very excited about this trip because this was the first chance for us to go out of Kuala Lumpur. We prepared and packed up everything about a a weeks before the day of departure. At 8.a.m. on July 4th, we got ready to jump on the car and drive straight to terrengganu. Along the street, we stopped twice for breakfast and lunch and we took two more hours because we went to the wrong ways, as well. Therefore, we were at pulau tioman in the evening. While I was checking in two rooms at the hotel, my cousins were going to the beach to find a place to go fishing. After I carried our bags in our rooms, I called a taxi and came to them.

Night fell down completely. This meant I missed the beautiful scene of the setting sun on the beach. The surface of ocean was calm except there were some waves running up and splashing against the shore. The cool wind covered my body when I walked on a bridge where my cousins were fishing. No one stirred. No one spoke. My cousins thoroughly concentrated and stared at the shade underneath the bridge where our fishing robs were dropped. They still did not recognize me till I made some noise by opening a cooler to see their result. The cooler was entirely empty. It was not surprise to me because I definitely knew how well they could fish. Leaving them behind, I went

I strongly believe that if one is to be successful in society, setting goals and prioritizing them is very crucial. Having your goals set and prioritizing them does not only give you a clear focus on things you have to do, but it helps you to organize your plans so that you can set time limit and boundaries in achieving those goals. There are so many goals that I want to achieve my life. Since goals can only be achieved if they are realistic, timing and attainable, I have categorized my goals into long and short term goals.…

“I’ve been drinking since I was twelve, but I don’t think I was exactly twelve. Maybe older, maybe younger. I’m a little tipsy now but that’s not what you want to hear. I was once told I drank like an eel, I’m not sure what that meant, but again that’s not what you want to hear. You want me to sit here and tell you the exact traumatic moment when I began drinking; It was the first time I ever had that nightmare. The next day I asked my dad why drank, he said ‘I drink to forget’. He never told me what he was trying to forget. I thought ‘I drinking makes you forget, maybe I’ll forget the dream.’ So I drank a couple of beers then went to sleep. The dream was worse than before, but that was the cycle every night for the past thirty-five years.”…

We see animals every day. They are our pets, companions, and, to some, family. They are also our dinner, new jacket or bag, and the pain behind our household products. So when does it qualify as cruel, or even inhumane? What is animal cruelty? According to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) “Intentional cruelty, or abuse, is knowingly depriving an animal of food, water, socialization, or veterinary care. Maliciously torturing, maiming, or killing an animal.” Three major examples of animal cruelty today are found in the food industry, shelters, and testing facilities.…

Imagine constantly being asked “Why can’t you just pull yourself together?” Being told “You have nothing to be depressed about, you have so much going for you!”, “But you don’t SEEM depressed, you were just laughing an hour ago!” For those struggling with many of life’s abundant obstacles, suicide seems like the ideal compromise for the self-destruction and agony to end. I believe that suicide is not the answer because I’ve overcome it myself. I’ve had to learn in the most difficult of ways that suicide is exceedingly traumatic for the friends and family members. 90 percent of people who have taken their own life have a diagnosable mental disorder. There are countless alternatives for people who struggle with these disorders, long before suicide is even being contemplated.…

The United States has a history of discrimination and that has greatly influenced many parts of our country. Even after the Civil War racial inequality was still a way especially in the confederate South for a hundred years. Discrimination greatly affected minorities in all aspects of their life. A minority was any person who was not a white male. It mainly affected their education and job opportunities and say they had in the government. However in 1964, the United States passed civil rights laws. It was called the Civil Rights Act. The act banned discrimination based on a person's color, sex, national origin, and race. It mainly protected the rights of African Americans and other minorities. The Civil Rights Act said minorities have the right to vote, use hotels, restaurants, movies, parks, and any other public place. The law also said that public schools had to be desegregated. Also funds from programs the promoted segregation were taken away. The act also included the prohibition of job discrimination and the creation of the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission. The equal employments opportunities commission was a great step in ending discrimination. What it did were ban employers from discriminating against someone for any reason. Even though the Civil Rights Act was put into place a problem still remained. This problem was minorities lacked skill and proper education to do jobs which would put them on the same playing field as whites. So President Kennedy came up with Affirmative Action.…

Malia and I were very excited about the trip. We had planned it for more than one and a year and a half. The radio was playing in the background. I heard something about a new rumor about cruises disappearing in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It was like the Bermuda triangle. A new way to sell souvenirs I thought. The bags were packed and our passports were lying on the kitchen table, ready to be used for the first time. My family was somewhat poor compared to other families in our city, so we very rarely travelled. I always had a dream about going on a big cruise from my hometown San Francisco to Japan… But while that had been my dream for more than 10 years, I never believed that it would never happen.…
