There are many different players within the Family Entertainment Industry. Players such as; DreamWorks, Universal Studios, Cartoon Network, and PBS make up a portion of the market, but the two biggest names in the United States are Disney and Nickelodeon. These two Industry giants have molded the young minds of generations and brought entertainment to the masses. Both companies accomplished industry success in their unique way, and both originated in completely different ways. This paper will focus on the differences in origin, branding, and big/small screen presence between the two. Walt Disney started on October 16, 1923, with the start of Alice’s Wonderland with his brother Roy Disney. Walt and Roy changed the company name from “Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio” to “Walt Disney Studio”. (not sure how to quote from the website) “When they first started they were located in a back of a real estate office then was able to move next door to a whole store as their studio.” What gave Walt and Roy Disney their start was when they made Mickey Mouse on November 18, 1928. He later searched for a replacement for Oswald the lucky rabbit which happened to be a mouse names Mickey Mouse. So in the early 1950’s he mortgaged his life insurance, stock holdings, house and furniture to purchase an orange grove near Anaheim, California and finance the construction of a 185 acre amusement park.
