He had made a short film in Kansas City about a little girl in a cartoon world, called Alice's Wonderland, and he planned to use it as his "pilot" film to sell a series of these Alice Comedies to a distributor. On October 16, 1923, a New York distributor, M. J. Winkler, contracted to release the Alice Comedies, and this date became the formal beginning of The Walt Disney Company. Originally known as the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio, with Walt Disney and his brother Roy as equal partners, the company soon changed its name, at Roy's suggestion, to the Walt Disney Studio, which was initially housed in a succession of storefront buildings in Hollywood before becoming established on Hyperion Avenue. The infamous Mickey Mouse was sprouted from the heads of Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. Walt began to animate his first cartoon character in 1920. 8 years later, Disney’s big break came. Walt’s first cartoon was a character by the name of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. However, he lost the right to produce anymore cartoons featuring the Oswald. (“The History of Mickey Mouse,” 2011.) To make matters worse, his teams of artists were hired by Universal Studios. Upset, Walt teamed up with his own brother, Roy Disney, to make their own production. One day in 1928, during his 5 day trip on a train with his wife, Walt got the idea for a character inspired by a pet mouse he used to own back when he was a child living in a farm in rural Missouri (“The History of Mickey Mouse,” 2011.) At first, he chose to name the anthropomorphic creature, “Mortimer”, but was quickly shot down by his wife. Instead, she demanded a cuter name for the mouse, thus Mickey Mouse was born.…

The Silly Symphonies stopped coming out in 1939, but Mickey and friends, (including Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto, and plenty more), were still going strong and still very popular. In 1934, Walt started work on another new idea: a cartoon that ran the length of a feature film. Everyone in Hollywood was calling it "Disney's Folly", but Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) was anything but, winning critical raves, the adoration of the public, and one big and seven little special Oscars for Walt. Now Walt listed animated features among his ever-growing list of accomplishments. While continuing to produce cartoon shorts, he also started producing more of the animated features. Pinocchio (1940), Dumbo (1941), and Bambi (1942) were all successes; not even a flop like Fantasia (1940) and a studio animators' strike in 1941 could stop Disney now. In the mid- 40s, he began producing "packaged features", essentially a group of shorts put together to run feature length, but by 1950 he was back with animated features that stuck to one story, with Cinderella (1950),…
