NYSAA Reflection
The teacher displays solid knowledge of the important concepts in the discipline and how these relate to one another. The teachers selected the following CCLS NYSAA extension for Global History Standard, " Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of major ideas, eras, themes, developments, and turning points in history and examine the broad sweep of history from a variety of perspectives" but she is unable to structure the lesson where this standard is fully executed.

The teacher is able to provide accurate explanations of the content. For example, at 8:14, student Alejandro asked, " How many times a day do Muslims pray?" She said, "Five times a day." Another student asked at 8:17, " What is the names of Muslim Holiday?", The teacher responded, " Eid-Ul-Fitr." But Lesson and unit plans use limited instructional strategies. Her lesson focus was, " Islam" and the Learning goal stated, " Students will assess the levels of understanding and ability to share/ communicate that understanding with their peers."
Some of the learning activities and materials are aligned with the instructional outcomes and represent moderate cognitive challenge. The lesson plan

Students only received information from the information wall. Students were not encouraged to do their own research. The teacher grouped students based on their performance levels as evidenced by her reflection during post observation conference. She assessed students' work from the previous day to determine their readiness level for group assignment. Teacher made attempts to meet some students' IEP goals. Example: Students Maylena's IEP states,"Correctly complete a five sentence informational paragraph with a topic sentence, supporting details from the text and a conclusion." It was evident that Maylena was working on writing a paragraph with a topic

Inspired by the work of Yayoi Kusama, an artist known for her playful artwork, we wanted to activate a space that is ordinarily seen as a place for quiet study. We used colorful pom-poms to alter this study area and to convey a cheerful atmosphere that contrasts with its usual industrial ambience. The colors we chose were purposeful to further communicate a mischievous feeling that will hopefully bring a smile to your face during these stressful last weeks of…

Ninth grade tackles global history in the world of secondary education. Early in the year students are asked to examine the characteristics of the Paleolithic and Neolithic eras as well as more complex societies and civilizations like Mesopotamia. As the school year surges on, students and teachers happen upon the rise and fall of the Roman Empire in the third unit of the New York State Common Core entitled 9.3 Classical Civilizations: Expansion, Achievement, Decline. Along with its study of the Roman Empire, this unit also dives into Greek and Mayan civilizations. Unit 9.3 harps on the geographical factors that either hindered or encouraged expansion, the systems of beliefs, laws, government and social hierarchy, cultural achievements, as well as the conflicts endured by all three civilizations. With the pace of a high school curriculum and the richness of all of these topics it would be extraordinarily difficult to balance…

The key concepts and concept outline that follow provide a conceptual framework to help teachers and students understand, organize and prioritize historical developments within each designated historical period. The framework clearly indicates the depth of knowledge required for each key concept. To further clarify the depth of knowledge for each key concept, multiple supporting concepts (designated by Roman numerals in the outline) and supporting evidence for each supporting concept (designated by letters in the outline) are listed. By focusing the key concepts on processes or themes rather than on specific historical facts or events, the outline provides greater freedom for teachers to choose examples that interest them or their students to demonstrate the concept. To foster a deeper level of learning, the outline distinguishes content that is essential to support the understanding of key concepts from content examples that are not required.…

I help children develop cognitive skills by encouraging them to try things out. For example, when it snowed this winter the children placed snowballs in the freezer and discovered that they froze into solid ice. They thought that the snow would stay the same rather than freeze, and were surprised that the snow froze. We discussed what happened and why it may have happened. Cognitive skills are used daily in our classroom and the children have fun developing them. Creativity is in the materials and interest areas throughout our classroom. Children have access to art supplies to create their own artwork. Paints, markers, pencils, crayons, and paper are available for children all the time. Many types of music are sung and played during the day. Children can use instruments and scarves to move with the music. Many different kinds of clothing can be found in the dramatic play area.…
