My Practice Assessment At The Kingstown Technical Institute: Caleab Nicholls
My practice assessment was done at the Kingstown Technical Institute, affectionately called KTI. KTI is a semi-enclosed facility located next door to the Bishops College School with entrance leading from the Wilson Hill road. The institution prepares students who journey from various schools, for the world of work by offering theory and practical learning that is related to a specific trade or occupation. The two storey structure of KTI consists of five classrooms; eight labs; eight toilets, including the toilets for staff; a staffroom and an office.
The Kingstown Technical Institute is a bit too small to accommodate the number of schools that attend class, therefore there is a mixture of different schools that make up the classes. Also, some …show more content…
Caleab is a repeater of almost every form he has been in. At the age of eighteen years, he is a student of the Intermediate High School in the fourth form. Caleab’s mother says that she does not know what else to do with him so she is just going to give up. Due to what his mother said, Caleab is of the view that his mother does not believe in him so he also wants to give up by stating that it makes no sense for him to try. With this awareness I came to realize that his attitude towards learning was very poor.
For a student at his age, Caleab was slower than his classmates, his reading level was below average and he was easily distracted which I believe assisted in him being a repeater. Due to the fact that his comprehension ability is below that of the expected level he does not understand certain concepts that are taught in the class so at times he tends to become disruptive by talking to other students or speaking out of turn. To deal with this disruptive behavior I often gave him tasks to do such as cleaning the board or handing out papers or I would call on him to help with sticking up my charts as he was much taller than I was. I also used the name dropping classroom management technique, calling his name while I speak to gain his attention. There are various classroom management techniques such as name dropping, environmental control, nonverbal cuing, modeling, focusing and keeping students engaged among others. To ensure that there is efficient classroom management I used various techniques named above, however, keeping my students engaged was the technique I concentrated on, this gave me control over the whole class. I used the engagement technique most of the time in order to lessen the amount of students’ disruptions and increase lack of interest during my
