My Most Influential People In Life
What aspects of your life experiences do you think make you a good candidate for medical school?

I have worked in the medical field for a combined total of 5 years now and the number one thing that patients and staff tells me most is that I have such a kind heart. I genuinely love getting to know and help each and every patient. Providing the best care so that people feel not only well taken care of, but loved, is very important to me.

Who are the three most influential people in your life?

My mother, grandmother, and father are the most influential people in my life because they have each had to sacrifice so much financially, physically, and mentally to get me to the point I am at today. They are always motivating me to follow my dreams

First, is to travel and treat people around the world before I settle down. The other goal is to serve the underprivileged. I have been volunteering at Vidant Health for the past few months, and they focus on treating the underprivileged, sometimes even taking care of their medical bill. I did not quite understand it at first; my father always told me “There is no free lunch.” However, being a volunteer you mostly run blood, urine and feces samples to the lab, but the other side is patient care. Hearing the patients’ stories and spending time with them, I realize they are not just patients but real people with real stories. The medical field is not just about science, but it is mainly about the people we treat. I now firmly believe everyone should have a chance at the best healthcare available to…

I have had multiple influential people in my life, but I'm not going to say my parents or a great teacher, but rather someone closer to my age. Andrew Calton, a good friend and great influence. Andrew helped me “get back on my feet” when I was scared to kayak. I would stay on the lake and not go on rivers because I had no confidence in myself. Late at night he and Jack White, another good friend, came to my cabin at camp and told me there was a spot on a trip and he wanted me to go. I went on the trip and the fact that they wanted me to go boosted my confidence. We went on harder rivers I had never been on and I did not swim, or bail out of by boat once.…

There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

Working at the hospital has at times been humbling; for example when providing end-of-life care, performing last offices and supporting relatives after the loss of a loved one. From these experiences I have learned that medicine is as much about being a compassionate and supportive individual as it is about medications and procedures. Consequently, I have found communication and rapport building skills to be some of my strongest attributes and think that I am particularly empathetic as…

When I was four years old I was asked, "Katie, what do you want to do when you grow up?” To my family's surprise my response was "Work on hearts or brains". This aspiration has never wavered, and has only become more a part of who I am today through first hand experiences and opportunities I have had in the medical field. I have been fortunate enough to see surgeries first hand, work next to medical professionals, and get an idea of what different occupations bring to the table in the field of medicine.…

I believe I’m suited for a medical career because I am compassionate and I want to lift other people up. As a doctor, I would not only want to treat patients, but also communicate with them, and ultimately support and empower them to make the most of their lives. The most influential person in my life would have to be my sister. We have watched each other struggle and we have watched each other triumph. Growing up, the odds were always against us. I believe that it is not only my destiny, but also my passion for helping sick people that keep me working hard in the medical field. My childhood sowed the seeds of my passion for medicine. When I was in the first year of my elementary school, my family started to experience serious financial difficulties as my father was cheated by his friends. Thus, we could only visit a physician assistant when we were sick. My heart was broken when my father was diagnosed with heart disease and we could not afford to visit a cardiologist. I felt sad and helpless when my siblings had severe typhoid fever and measles. I wept when my sick dogs died one after another because we did not have the money to pay for the veterinarian. Thus, as a little girl, I firmly decided that I will study hard and was adamant to become a competent doctor who will be able to cure a lot of sick people and sick animals.…

I’ve learned through the eyes of my mother that life isn’t easy. My mother has come a long way after losing her mother at a very young age and growing up with her father and grandmother and five siblings, one being a twin. My mom’s dad had to make sacrifices while raising my mom and her siblings; it wasn’t easy growing up without her mother, my mom put herself through college with the help of her dad. My mom has a successful career and is married and is raising a happy family. Initially I thought of a celebrity as a person with the most influence in my life, but as I thought about it, I realized my mother has had the most influence in my life, always smiling, laughing and having fun. When my mother is around it’s always a fun time with her, sometimes I have to say “ok, mom enough” and we laugh. My mother is always lifting others up and she always has an encouraging word for someone. My mother by far has had the greatest and most lasting impact on me; she is always there for me and has never let me down. My mother is the epitome of what it means to love unconditionally. She loves my siblings and I no matter what we do; she is always there for us and always gives us an encouraging word or quoting a verse from the Bible.…

A huge influence on my life has always been music in general, but some artist have has colossal impacts on my life and one of my biggest role models has been Dan “Soupy” Campbell. Dan Campbell is the lead singer of The Wonder Years and his songs and lyrics are about finding out who you want to be while growing up, finding a place of belonging and keeping a positive attitude even when things seem substandard. His songs seem to continuously help me out from day to day. Everyone tries to find somewhere where they’ll fit in, feel like a part of something, and knowing that someone is able to put those types of emotions into lyrics not only helps me out but also the thousand of kids like who listen to them. Music and songs like these like these to me have a way of helping you get through some of the most distressing days and just gives you something to relay on. A lot of his lyrics are about being happy and knowing that even the most unpleasant things come to an end, having such an optimistic look on life like that is something I try to carry on in my life. His positive character and always stay true to yourself attitude is something I admire because not many people keep these attribute growing up let alone when they become famous. Dan Campbell will always have a monumental influence on my life through his music and lyrics and the significant role model he is for me.…
