Dying Patients Personal Statement
I believe that it is not only my destiny, but also my passion for helping sick people that keep me working hard in the medical field. My childhood sowed the seeds of my passion for medicine. When I was in the first year of my elementary school, my family started to experience serious financial difficulties as my father was cheated by his friends. Thus, we could only visit a physician assistant when we were sick. My heart was broken when my father was diagnosed with heart disease and we could not afford to visit a cardiologist. I felt sad and helpless when my siblings had severe typhoid fever and measles. I wept when my sick dogs died one after another because we did not have the money to pay for the veterinarian. Thus, as a little girl, I firmly decided that I will study hard and was adamant to become a competent doctor who will be able to cure a lot of sick people and sick animals.
Yet, I have an ever-growing wish to contribute more to society. I believe that I will die peacefully after spending my lifetime helping sick people. I regard my experience of helping dying patients to survive as the most precious, meaningful and sweetest moments of my life. I remember, I admitted a 60-year-old lady, who came with diarrhea and severe dehydration. She was unconscious, weak, and lethargic that two of her family members had to carry her to the emergency room.

One of the interesting things that I found was administering nebulizer for the first time. It was definitely learning and getting a new experience at the same time. However, once I was administering medication and documenting that, I was back to the patient. Moreover, I did take the rest of the vital signs for my assigned resident. There is no doubt for me that an issue I will find difficult to address in practice will be end of life matters, specifically difficult for me to conceptual grasp is withdrawal or withholding treatment of nutrition and hydration. On a personal level, my difficulty with this practice stems from my own personal experience in this area and my emotional grief. Several years ago, my dear friend bravely made the choice to enter into a hospice center. Prior to this decision, my friend, her family, and I spoke with the social worker regarding options and dilemmas each of us were experiencing. According to O'Donnell, Farrar, BrintzenhofeSzoc, Conrad, et al (2008), “patients and families increasingly turned to social workers to help them in their ethical…
