My Life Be Like
Glenwood, Glenwood, Glenwood, lol. Man its been a journey for me at Glenwood. Coming to Glenwood was the best decision my mom has made in my life. Before I came to Glenwood I lived in the dangerous part of the south side of Chicago. My family and I lived in a two bedroom apartment. I went to a public school right down the street but never experienced the ability to walk from home to school. My mom always made sure I was escorted or drove up to school when she was away at work. Reason for that was because she feared the danger of me being in the wrong place at the wrong time like many other young people that life was taken away because of somebody else’s stupidity. After a while my mom got fed up with the violence around my house. That’s when my mom decided to send me here to Glenwood. I was enrolled here the summer of 2001. Im not going to lie, when I first came to Glenwood I was not feeling it. Plus what added to my uncertainty were the tall tales that was told to me before I came. It was a lady by the name of ms schuler who told me that Glenwood was like Hogwarts lol. And that there was a pool, and go karts that we could ride anytime we wanted to. Those were here exact words. I thought to myself that this would not be that bad after all huh. I was wrong. There was no sign of any magic. Nor go-karts lol. I was bamboozled. I hated all the rules and how structured Glenwood was to me. After time I grew to get use to it here. The contributors were my new friends that I found at Glenwood. There’s only 3 words that can describe Glenwood, “ a learning experience”. I don’t think that there is no other place on this planet that could have gave me the opportunities and life lessons that Glenwood has given me. I have learned to respect authority. Most importantly is to take responsibility for my actions. Glenwood I believe has prepared me for the outside world. Every house parent that was here and is here now has taught me something. First I would like to thank the

My parents first heard about the new program in the middle of my fifth grade year. Because of the program’s objective, my parents were convinced to enroll me in the program. A week after the interviewing process I was accepted to attend the program. When I first arrived, I notice how the school was smaller than other schools. I also found the environment of the school quite peculiar to what I was immune to. A month later I was one of many students being prepared for college. All three years, as being a Risley student, the program was given a report on its outstanding performances.…

I grew up in a two small towns called Ruston, La and Grambling, La. I spent my childhood in Ruston and my teenage years in Grambling. The two towns are so small it's like 1 small town almost. I enjoyed my childhood there. It was a place where kids were free to run and play. Til this day it is still a place where kids can be free and mothers don't have to constantly fret about there child being kidnapped of the street. I remember being up the street outside playing jump rope, volley ball, kickball, football, softball, and basketball with all the neighborhood kids. When evening came and the sun went down I remember my mother standing in the yard calling my name for me to come home because it was getting late.…

Brown Elementary School in Grambling. Besides the drama with my parents, I enjoyed my childhood. Eventually, I started middle school at Grambling Middle Magnet School and for the next three years I played snare drum in the high school band. At this point of my life, things got kind of twisted. I started hanging out with the wrong crowd and as I carried over to high school, I tried a lot of different things. Some things were bad and some weren’t. My grades were slowly dropping until my father decided to take me out of Grambling High School and putting me into Cedar Creek School in Ruston. I transferred during the second semester of my sophomore year and attended there until graduation. I hated this school! I was around a lot of different people of many different races and I didn’t get along with a lot of them until my senior year. I was so happy when I graduated. It was a great feeling to be done with high school! As of now, I attend Southern University in Baton Rouge, where I will pursue a degree in…

Back in my days my brother, sisters and I was always fortunate to have a two parent household. What was even better, a stay at home mom who cater to our every needs. Whether its school meetings, recitals and any of our game, she was always there. What was even better about having a stay at home mom, was something we didn’t realize, something that I could probably say that kept me growing healthy, strong and in shape and that was, she always made sure we had a good home cook meals. From breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner, my mother made sure we were not swept away from what I call today the “fast food life.”…

One perk was that we were only less than a mile away from school so we could walk to it.After deciding on our house we made the long haul up to the house we were currently living in which was a two level red house with two rooms but a couple extra one for office space and play rooms. We had to start packing because we would move there in a couple months. We pack every day taking breaks every now and then and we were loading up the moving van with the big stuff that needed to go down to IL first. We had some help loading by my dad's boss Greg and some of my other family members but on the day we were working it started to rain. It rained really hard and even hailed and we had to cover up our items with tarps and while moving the couch my dad leg got hurt which was bad. After the storm we finished packing up and made the trip down to Illinois.Once we got to our new house we started to unpack the two trucks with our stuff. It was a little sad to see that some of our glass mirrors and other stuff broke but in the end most of our stuff made…

I was encouraged to pitch in. When I, as a toddler would see my mother doing anything vaguely interesting — cooking, cleaning, putting together furniture — I wanted to get in there with her and help. When this happened my mother would try to find a way for me to assist. I may not have been able to stir a pot of spaghetti sauce, for example, but she would ask me to get her the spoon. She would also let me assist in putting the place mats on the table.…

I had lost many friends because I refused to ditch class and smoke. I was deemed uncool because I put school work before anything else. This wasn’t anything like the environment I had hoped for. During the last several months of my Freshman year, I decided to transfer yet again; I was going back to Beaverton School District. Luckily, I knew plenty of kids from Junior High and Elementary school, but I was still concerned. Would I be thrown into another school run by stoners? Would I be able to receive the education I had expected from Wilson? The answers to those amazed me. From the first day of school, I felt like I had been here for years. Students were quick to introduce themselves, many offering to show me around or tell me all the hangout spots. I was amazed by the kindness that everyone showed to a complete stranger. Students held doors for me, invited me to sit with them in class or at lunch, and were quick to offer tips on how to survive BHS.…

I was worried at first about college because it was a completely new experience. Rock Valley has given me the opportunity to experience college while still being at home. I was afraid that the transition into college would be very hard and was quite anxious about, but it has been going well so far. College was in some ways exactly what I was expecting it to be while in other ways not really what I thought it would be, both in good ways. My advisor at RVC has been there for me helping me understand what classes I would need to take to meet my goal of graduating with an associate in science. She has also helped me plan my next steps in figuring out what I will need to continue to my four-year college. Rock Valley has given an overall good experience for my first semester so far and I am pleased to be learning…

This program may be good for others, but for me, it wasn’t the best choice, I should have gotten all of my work done from the start. Looking back through the 4 years I’ve been at this educational facility, I have not been trying my hardest, and it’s sad that I am only now coming to this realization. With the mindset that I currently have, I could have been passing in all of my classes, lived a better life, experience school activities, and live the normal life. Don’t get me wrong, not everything in Legacy was a bad experience. There were times where I felt happy, not pushed aside, and loved, that is the part that I loved about legacy, they accepted you for who you were, nothing more or nothing less, they treated you with respect when you deserved it, and told nothing but the truth when you needed it. I do not regret being in this program, but I sure do wish I tried harder during my high school career. If I don’t graduate now, I will at a better time, and then I will leave my…

During the summer before my sophomore year in high school my father had to relocate to Chicago for one year that gave us an opportunity to live there. We moved in August into a northern section of the city, Lincoln Park. Moving to Chicago was an exciting opportunity to live in a big city. Since I never lived in a big city, I was not really sure what to expect. The school where my brother and I were enrolled is Jones College Prep. In comparison to Lincoln Park, a residential area in the north section of Chicago, Jones College Prep was in the South Loop, a very busy downtown area of the City. Instead of mom driving us to school every day, we hopped on the Redline L-train and for 23 minutes each way travelled above and…

Parsons, Kansas, the place I were born and raised. I had been out of town before and went to another city and state but none to where I was willing to move when I got older. A large part of my family lived here, and this is where all my friends were from. My family was very close and we always spent the holidays together, so It wasn’t as if I was all alone at any time. Every one I needed was no more than a five- block radius from each other, so I could visit and have a good time pretty much all the time. Most of the friends I made in school didn’t leave, so I really had no reason to move when I got older. I enjoyed the country and all it had to offer I could go fishing, ride horses and make mud pies pretty much all day with the kids and go to the bars at night with my friends and family. I really could find no reason to leave, I worked at nursing home and had a pretty nice duplex that I never want to leave. I knew my way around like the back of my hands I had explored that town over the last 25 years; I could make a road map myself. My family was always having some kind of gathering on the weekend that I couldn’t be bored.…
