Patriotism

A true patriot is someone how is in agreement with his country’s basic beliefs and principles. However, sometimes the current government does not live up to the countries ideals in practice. It is at these times that a true patriot must oppose these practices. Sometimes this means breaking the laws and going against the ruling government; however one must conduct oneself with a sense of morality and pure motives.

When a country is not living up to its ideal, a true patriot will attempt to change laws so that morality can be restored. Many of our countries most patriotic people had to first see unjust laws and then try to fix them. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said that first, “Negro Leaders sought to negotiate with the city fathers.” (6) Since Negro Leaders are patriotic men they are first trying to negotiate with the “city fathers” to try to fix these unjust laws by still following the law. This is still legal since they are just trying to persuade the government. Since they are patriotic men they try to follow the current government as best as they can. A patriotic man Henry David Thoreau, a writer from the 1800’, said in his essay, “Men generally, under such a government as this, think that they ought to wait until they have persuaded the majority to alter them.”(16) This means that most people usually try to fix things by trying to persuade the majority of the people or government that the practices that the government is doing is wrong. But sometimes there things that are unjust that need to be changed immediately. Sometimes these legal ways take too long and need to be changed immediately or trying to persuade the majority of the people was unsuccessful.

If legal means are unsuccessful a true patriot would use non violent methods, and sometimes this includes breaking the laws. Even thou true patriots sometimes break the law they still follow their moral codes. This means they break the laws but never use violent methods.

The poem ‘the patriot’ showcases the possible effective result of a political uprising which reveals the evident fickle nature of societies supposed loyalty towards a potential leader. With recent, record-breaking protests such as the ones on the weekend of January 20-22 (as well as pre-existing ones such as the North Dakota Access Pipeline protests), more and more people are participating in the phenomenon that is peaceful resistance and protest, and, as officials say about the Women’s March during the weekend (to connect with an example), “not a single arrest was made” (Seipel, “The Hill”). Again, there are direct results, as the NDAP protests caused alternate considerations by the Army regarding the pipeline (Brodwin, “Business Insider”). The United States was a country created on the basis of revolution; the Declaration of Independence is the archetype document of resistance; even the Resistance in Star Wars is viewed as good with their attempts at disobedience. Thomas Jefferson sought for the balance of the inherent right of revolution with the need to conform to the set laws that exist to protect the well-being of all; with civil disobedience, Jefferson’s ideals are ensured. No one is claiming to be above the law, nor are they attempting to usurp the standing government. The people only want the efficient, peaceful change and positive transition that can only come from the peaceful resistance to laws. Peaceful resistance to laws positively impacts society as it brings about the change without violence and needless bloodshed and fighting and challenges thinking from different viewpoints in a mental and emotional standpoint that…

When looking at this question, the first thing we need to know is what a patriot is. The dictionary defines a patriot as a person who loves, supports, and defends his or her country and its interests with devotion and a person who regards himself or herself as a defender, especially of individual rights, against presumed interference by the federal government. Having a clear understanding of what a patriot is presumed to be, one could consider Joseph McCarthy a patriot.…

“We can’t all be Washingtons, but we can all be patriots.” Writer Charles F. Browne says this, meaning that we can’t all be perfect but we can be patriotic in our own ways. We can’t help the nation as much as Washington did but we can still help the government as much as possible. To be an American is to pursue unique and individual ideas and freedoms to benefit the central government. This includes the rights that the Founding fathers created. These rights are shown with the rejection of tyrants, the right to vote, and the first amendment.…

    Patriots or Traitors

Patriotism has always been a truly ambiguous term. The media portrays it with glory, while others describe it as “rebel” or “red-neck.” In addition, the fine line between patriot and traitor has always existed, as decisions and acts that have been made for the sake of so-called “patriotism” are called into question. The case of the Founding Fathers is also controversial. Before the Revolutionary War, the Sons of Liberty were still subjects of the English crown, and thus it can be argued that they were traitors. However, as history shows, the Founding Fathers were clearly patriots. Through their love of this country while trying to resolve issues without violence, their patriotism clearly defines this nation.…

Although, this definition is a good way to define patriotism, it is not the only way to define true patriotism. Patriotism can be defined differently to people. It is something that we as Americans have to feel within. Sometimes we as people have to actually experience things first hand rather than someone tells a person about their own precipitance of something. Different people having different stances on patriotism, make the identification of true patriots very interesting. True Patriotism is loving your country and being open mined that other people love their country the same as well. People, who are not truly patriots from within, are always trying to portray their pseudo patriotism by only remembering their country and national identity, on the Independence Day and other national occasions. On the other hand, the rest of the year is spent by constantly neglecting the responsibilities and liabilities as citizens and patriots of the country. This is what the other means by the term pseudo patriotism.
