“We can’t all be Washingtons, but we can all be patriots.” Writer Charles F. Browne says this, meaning that we can’t all be perfect but we can be patriotic in our own ways. We can’t help the nation as much as Washington did but we can still help the government as much as possible. To be an American is to pursue unique and individual ideas and freedoms to benefit the central government. This includes the rights that the Founding fathers created. These rights are shown with the rejection of tyrants, the right to vote, and the first amendment.

Over the change of time more people got the right to vote. The change of the groups included more people. To start, only white male landowners could vote. That changed to just white males. Being an American means having the freedom of expression, the means of going places wherever and whenever. People here have the choice to go to any school, play a sport, go to church, and pursue their goals. Government is chosen “by the people, for the people,” as written in the Gettysburg Address. Americans have a say in how they live. Leaders come from elections, not appointments; therefore, all people have the opportunity to be heard and contribute to the way that the country runs.…

What does it mean to be an American, to me it means that I have certain rights and freedoms that nobody can take away from me unless I deserve them to be taken. Most people believe that being an american means that you can get away with doing whatever you want because they have freedom of speech or the rights to do it, but sometimes those rights don’t apply and to me that seems like they are just trying to take advantage of what everyone believes what being an American means. Being an American means that you have more privileges than most countries do and people take that for granted.…

No one should ever have to suffer for what they believe in because someone else doesn’t approve and America is a place where we strive to allow everyone their own beliefs and happiness. Anyone, no matter where they are originally from, should be allowed to follow their dreams and live the life that they see for themselves. Not very long ago, a 19-year-old boy named Hamzah Aljahmi closed his eyes, never to wake up. His family had immigrated to America from Yemen with a dream of being free to do as they please. Hamzah discovered his own dream along the way. This was a dream shared by a 21-year-old Native American boy from a poor family. Professional boxers.…

What being an American means to me is that I have the rights to do anything. Even though we are able to have all of these rights doesn’t mean we are able to take advantage of them there are still consequences for our actions. All the people in the Navy, Army, Air-force etc have the job to protect us, not everyone who shoots people just because. Being an American to me means being respectful to everyone. Like what Harry S Truman said, “you know that being an American is more than a matter of where your parents came from. It is a belief that all men are created equally and that everyone deserves an even break.” Being an American means to be brave loyal and kind to everyone no matter what. We…

Many believe patriotism to be blind obedience to one's nation. Samuel Johnson, one of the most quoted European writers in history, said, “Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.” Are patriots really just a bunch of yes-men who bow to the president's every whim? If so, one wonders how we have managed to remain a democracy all these years.…
