My Fool Proof Plan for Getting an Internship

I'm just going to skip the intro and get right into it. The key to getting an internship can be broken down into 3 simple steps:
1. Create a fantastic resume that is very different than any other college resume you've seen.
2. Become a beast at interviews. Actually, easier than you think.
3. Learn and gain skills relevant to your industry. The part where lots of students fall short.

Create a fantastic resume.

A resume is a selling document. It is used to show why a company should hire you. The key to a fantastic resume is to first, make it different then all the other resumes. Second, you need to make it better than all the other resumes. You can make it different by adding color. Literally 98% of all

Every bullet point on your resume should follow this format:

Achieved ______ by doing ______.

You don't have to use those exact words but each bullet point should show what you did and how you did. If you want to go a step further, you should say the result of what you did (what was improved).

Another way to make your resume better is to list skills or techniques that are relevant in your industry. Don't list things such as Microsoft Word, leadership, public speaking . . . etc. Those are things that every student puts on their resume, but it doesn’t mean anything. Put specific skills and techniques that are actually used by companies today. You can even put technology you used before too. Also, your resume needs to be very easy to read. Don't make it wild with colors, don't use small fonts, and whitespace is your friend.

I think the main purpose of a resume is to provide a company with an overview of your professional achievements and background. Your resume acts as a marketing document, whether on paper or online, and its purpose is to introduce you to potential employers, promote what it is you have to offer and entice them into wanting to know more. According to Lauri Harwood, “a resume is a brief document, typically one or two pages, that details your qualifications for a particular job or job target.”…

All of the Smart Briefs I have been choosing I realized have focused on subjects similar to that of our assignments in this class and my choice for this Smart Brief is no different. The Smart Brief I chose is titled “The Secret to Resume Success” and was written by Romy Newman, President and Co-Founder of Fairygodboss, on huffpost.com. Now all of us have applied for jobs in the past, are currently applying for jobs, and or will in the future. In my 22 years of life I have applied for several jobs but have only gotten a few of the jobs that I have applied for and very soon I will be yet again looking for a new job. During this class we have been working on our resumes, networking, and our portfolios. While I know I have a decent resume I know it could be better. The very first thing…

We spent a while on researching the proper way to apply to a job; including how to fill out an application, how to do a cover letter and different interview skills. I come to find out that it is very important to know how to fill out an application the right way and know how to write up a resume because those two things can make or break your chances in getting the job. When writing your resume you want to use ¨power words¨ in order to make yourself sound more appealing. Also your formatting of the resume has a bigger impact on the job than you might think. You want to make sure your resume is only one page, filled completely but not too cluttered and is always truthful to what you are capable of doing. When filling out the application the most important thing to think about is to be honest. You do not want to imply that you can do something that you can not do. Next, to create a successful cover letter you want to make sure that your formatting is correct. Also you want to make it appoint that you are interested in the job and go into a little bit of detail on why you think you would be perfect for the job. Lastly, at the end of your cover letter you always want to ask for a interview and that you look forward to hearing from them. Once you do get the interview you want to prepare for it. You want to look presentable, like you actually want the job. Also you can simply look up…

Resume is a document used by persons to present their backgrounds and skills. Résumés can be used for a variety of reasons, but most often they are used to secure new employment. A typical résumé contains a summary of relevant job experience and education. The résumé is usually one of the first items, along with a cover letter and sometimes an application for employment, which a potential employer sees regarding the job seeker and is typically used to screen applicants, often followed by an interview.…
